John Walter Davis, 96, departed this life on Sunday, January 14, 2018, while at the McDonald County Living Center in Anderson, Missouri.
John was born September 19, 1921. He lived in Noel, Missouri all his life. On September 19, 1944, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Elizabeth Rousselot. To this union three children were born. Dorothy went home to be with the Lord on March 30, 1996, after 51 years of marriage. Also preceding John in death were his parents, Maggie N. (Terry) Davis and Charles E. Davis, four brothers, Baby Davis, Don Davis, Jim Davis, and Bob Davis.
John was required to get special permission from his parents, since he was just 17, to join the US Navy, where he proudly served this country during WW II as a Chief Petty Officer in the US Navy. John served from November 16, 1939, to October 14, 1947. He served aboard the USS Altair, USS North Carolina, and the USS Missouri. John was proud to be a Plank Owner of the USS North Carolina, where he put the ship into commission and took it out of commission. John received the American Campaign Medal, the Victory Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense/Asiatic Pacific Medal, and the Phillipine Liberation Medal
Upon his return from the war, John built many homes in Noel, several are still in existence. He also farmed most of his life. He enjoyed checking his cows and caring for the family farm. He liked bringing in a large bucket of blackberries so Dorothy could bake one of her famous blackberry cobblers for everyone. He was the originator of Wayside Park in Noel, Missouri, where many fond memories were made. He retired as a Noel Rural Route Mail Carrier and enjoyed many more years of family, farming, fishing, and friends.
John is survived by a son, Robert Davis and wife Linda, son Dick Davis and wife Tandi Jo, a daughter Ann(Davis) Otterstedt and husband retired Col. Charles Otterstedt, six grandchildren, Jason Davis and wife Debbie, Courtney Jo (Davis) Powell and husband Robbie, Lindsay Jo-Ann Davis, Tyler Davis and wife Jessica, Katie (Otterstedt) Hancock and husband Nolan, Charles Otterstedt and wife Xanthe, along with nine great-grandchildren, Libby, Jake, Jack, Harper Jo, Logan, Brayden, Jaxton, Beckett, and Emerson, and a sister of John’s who is living in California, Terry Maloney.
John was a member of the United Methodist Church of Noel, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church of Noel c/o of the funeral home.
The family is honoring John’s wishes to not have a public service, however, request your remembrance in thoughts and prayers.
