Helen Louise Swem, 82, Neosho, entered into rest peacefully on Nov. 4, 2018. She was born March 30, 1936 in Neosho to Joe and Nellie (Wolfe) Young. Helen was a lifelong Neosho area resident and was a member of the NHS class of 1954. For over 25 years, she worked in the Newton County Courthouse, both in the Assessor’s office, as well as serving as the Circuit Clerk and Recorder of Deeds. Helen was a member of Hillcrest Church of Christ, The Women’s Republicans of Newton County, Newton County Republican Central Committee, and a former ABWA member. Her greatest enjoyment was spending time with her children and grandchildren. Helen also enjoyed cake decorating, baking, embroidery and travel.
Helen married Bob Swem on Dec. 22, 1953 in Neosho; he preceded her in death on Nov. 7, 2011. She is survived by three children: Steve Swem of Neosho, Linda and James Smith of Franklin, TN and Debbie Brinkoetter; in-laws: Don and Geri Swem of Neosho and Lynn Swem of Seneca, MO; a cousin, Georgia Lee Cooper of Anderson, MO; niece, Jackie Graue of Joplin, MO; nephew, Buddy Burr of Branson, MO; eight grandchildren: Amanda and Bobby Dickey, Ryan and Shelly Swem, Philip Swem, Jennifer and Kyle Calvert, Brandon Smith, Kristen and Aaron Anderson; six great grandchildren: Haley, Abbi, Katie, Jayden, Karter and Lilian; one great granddaughter, Emma, coming soon; one great-great grandson, Bentley, coming soon; and numerous other family and friends.
Services will be 10:00 am, Thursday, Nov. 8, 2018 at Clark Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, Neosho. Rick Hyder, Brandon Smith, Glen Honeycutt, and John Deffenbaugh will officiate services. A private family burial will be held at the Diamond Cemetery. The family will have a time of visitation on Wednesday, Nov. 7 at Clark Funeral Home from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m.
