Jean Friend

(From Simpson Funeral Home)

Gladys Jean Friend was born in Reading, England to the late Clement and Edith Sarah Jane Bailey on October 10, 1939 and departed this earth April 14, 2021. Those two dates are notable, but not nearly as remarkable as the all the days she graced us with in between.

Jean was the youngest of 10 children. Her beloved sister Florrie, as well as many nieces and nephews, whom she held dear to her heart, still survive overseas.

Jean fell in love with a handsome, charming American GI, Dewey “Buddy” Friend, who was stationed at an US Air Force base in her hometown of Reading, England. They were joined in marriage on July 26, 1958. From this union, Jean reared 7 children who she loved unconditionally until her last breath.

Her children Ricky, Denny, Gary, Tracy, Lisa and Jerry survive. Dewey as well as their eldest daughter, Susan, greeted Jean at the gate the day the Lord called her home. She was not only the best mother anyone could hope for, but she was also the most amazing grandmother to 17 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. She loved her family beyond measure.

Jean was a member of the First Baptist Church in Carl Junction. She had an abundance of love to give, having had a hand in caring for dozens and dozens of babies at the First Baptist Learning Center for over 30 years. FBC was not simply a place of employment to Miss Jean. Her coworkers and all the parents that entrusted her to care for their children, whom she still spoke of fondly even in her twilight years, were loved like extended family. She was a blessing to all who knew her and she will be missed dearly.

Jean’s family will be gathered at Simpson Funeral Home in Carl Junction to receive visitors at 10:00 AM Monday, April 26, 2021, immediately followed by her celebration of life service at 11:00 AM at the funeral home. Burial will follow services at Carl Junction Cemetery.

Services are under the direction of Simpson Funeral Home in Carl Junction. Visit www.simpsonfh.com for online condolences.
