Mark Wayne Thorstenson, age 70 of Carl Junction, Missouri, passed away on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at his home, surrounded by family.
Mark served in the Army as a dog handler from 1962-1969, returning to Sioux Falls, South Dakota in 1970. He served on the Sioux Falls Police Department, retiring as Captain at the age of 48 in 1996. In 1982, he married Sandy Albert and they raised Janell, his beloved daughter. In 2009, they moved to Carl Junction, a suburb of Joplin, Missouri.
Mark was deeply involved in the lives of his grandchildren. He loved sitting on the front porch watching the youngest play while visiting with the older grandchildren. Mark was also known for his friendly wave and watchful eye over the neighborhood.
He is survived by his wife, Sandy Thorstenson; daughter, Janell Goebel and husband Jeremy of Carl Junction; step son, Chris Albert of Hollywood, Florida; his pride and joy, grandkids, Zachary, Lexi, Abbey, Mati and Cooper Goebel; sister, Mary Eich of Sioux Falls; twin brother, Marvin Thorstenson and wife, Becky of Sioux Falls; nephews, Brian Thorstenson and wife, Carmen and Brent Thorstenson of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Other than his parents, Mark was preceded in death by his step father, Velmer Jordt.
Funeral arrangements are planned for Tuesday, February 27 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Church of Oronogo Youth Chapel. Family will receive friends on Monday from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to either the F.O.P.A. of Sioux Falls or "Right Here-Right Now" of Christ Church of Oronogo, both in care of the mortuary.
Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary, Joplin, Missouri.
