Mary “Trudy” Tignor, age 93, passed away on Wednesday, February 14, 2018, at National Health Care in Joplin, where she resided for the past three years.
A lifelong resident of Joplin, Trudy was born in Joplin on November 16, 1924, to Martin Thacker and Margaret Bingham Dreisbach. She married William “Bill” Tignor on April 12, 1946 at the Seventh Ave. Presbyterian Church in Washington D.C. He preceded her in death on May 15, 1989.
Trudy was a lifelong learner who was well-educated and went on to become a mother, teacher, musician, artisan and business owner. She graduated from Norman High School in 1941 and attended college at James Madison University in Virginia, University of Maryland and Pittsburg State University. She earned a bachelor’s degree in home economics and taught in the Duenweg and Joplin school districts for 19 years before she and Bill became business owners. For 20 years they owned and operated Imperial Pottery, a business that shipped handcrafted antique reproduction pottery and gifts to buyers across the world.
She was an accomplished violist, and was invited to play in the University of Oklahoma Orchestra while she was still a high school student at Norman High School. During college, she played in the James Madison University Orchestra and later played in the Joplin Community Orchestra and the Missouri Southern State College Orchestra.
Family, music and church were all very important to Trudy. She was an active member of Joplin Church Alive, and was a former member of First Presbyterian Church of Joplin.
She is survived by her twin sons and a daughter all of Joplin: Marty Tignor and wife Anita, Bob Tignor and wife Cindy, and Nancy Harryman and husband Dave. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren: Martel Tignor, Teressa Tignor Gilbreth, Kirk Harryman, Lance Tignor, Staci Tignor Saunders, Matt Tignor, Ryan Harryman, Jeremy Tignor, Drew Tignor, Rob Harryman and Dustin Tignor, their spouses and 29 great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Patty, Elizabeth and Sandy for the exceptional care and friendship they provided at National Health Care, as well as the staff of Compassus Hospice Care.
A celebration of life service for Trudy will be held on Monday, February 18, 2018, at 11 a.m. at The Light Church of Joplin, 2501 E. 20th St., with Rev. John Koehler officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 10-11 a.m. A private burial will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to RK Missions, in care of Joplin Church Alive, 917 Illinois, Joplin, Mo. 64801.
