Charles Richard Olson, age 88, Webb City, passed away at 3:44 p.m. Saturday, May 2, 2015 at Mercy Hospital, Springfield, after an illness.
Charles was born September 20, 1926 in Oronogo, Missouri to the late Elmer W. Olson and Martha Gilchrist Olson and had lived in the Joplin area all of his life.
He worked for the former B.F. Goodrich Tire Company in Miami, Oklahoma for 38 years, retiring when they closed in 1986. Not one to sit in one place for too long, he worked over 100 head of cattle on his property and bailed his own hay up until just four years ago.
Charles was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II. He attended Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, north of Joplin.
Charles married Jane M. Rothanbarger on October 3, 1958 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She survives at the home.
Additional survivors include a daughter, Karen Essley and her husband, Tom, Baxter Springs, Kansas; twin grandsons, Kyle Essley, Des Moines, Iowa, Kelly Essley, Kentucky; brother in law, Bill Rothanbargar, Albuquerque, New Mexico; and several other extended family members.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Elmer Olson; and a sister, Marie Leggett.
Services are planned for Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary Chapel. Rev. Bob Simon will officiate. Interment will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7-8:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary. Memorial contributions may be made to the Joplin Association of the Blind, in care of Parker Mortuary.
Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
