Marion Winferd Felkins age 89 of Carl Junction, Missouri passed away on Sunday, May 10, 2015 at The Arbors @ Silver Creek in Joplin.
He was born on June 12, 1925 in Carl Junction, Missouri. Marion grew up in a very large family during the hardships of the depression. He was the 11th child of 14 born. Marion graduated from Carl Junction High School in 1943 and was shortly drafted into the Marine Corp. He served in WWII for 2 years and 10 months in the United States. After discharge, Marion worked for the Empire Electric Company. He married Phyllis Gilbert in 1948, and moved to Kansas City, MO where he began his electrician apprenticeship training with Local Union 124. Marion was called again to serve his country. He served in the Korean War for 14 months. While in Korea, he completed factory modifications on fighter jets as an aircraft electrician. After discharge from the Marine Corp, Marion and Phyllis moved to Lee’s Summit, MO where they raised their children, Mark and Daryl Felkins. This marriage ended in divorce in 1980. Marion became reacquainted with a classmate of the class of 1943, Marjorie Dean Battin Wheatley at the Carl Junction All-School reunion. They fell in love and were married in 1989. They move to Carl Junction where they shared a happy and lovely home on the property where the Enterprise School house once was located. They were happily married until Margie’s death in 2008.
Marion was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Newton Felkins and Estella Mae Carpenter Felkins; brothers and sisters, Cecil “Pidge” Felkins, Dorothy Gaskill, Elmer “Sag” Felkins, Eunice “Missy” Felkins, Lily Browsky, Nettie Barbour, Merl Felkins, Nora Felkins, Johnnie Felkins, Charlie Ray Felkins, Stella Ruth Warden, an infant baby brother, and a step-son, Paul Wheatley. Marion is survived by his son, Mark Felkins of Seattle, WA; daughter, Daryl Lynn Felkins of Joplin; step-children, Jack (Sue) Wheatley, Lewis Wheatley, Martha (Larry) Oertle and Tammy Wheatley all of Illinois; grandchildren, Jack, Jr., Josh, Anne, Dean, Sara, Abby, Leslie, Laurie, Daniel, Susan O., and Susan F.; special niece & nephew, Vera Sue & Bill Russell and special long-time family friend, Norma Thomas; sister-in-law Martha Felkins; along with many nieces, nephew, and great grandchildren.
Marion has been taken for cremation and the family will have a memorial service on Friday, May 15, 2015 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Simpson Funeral Home in Carl Junction. Military graveside committal services will follow at Carl Junction Cemetery. The family would like to give a special thank you to Marion’s caregivers at Foxberry Terrace and the Arbor’s at Silvercreek. Marion had a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease, so in lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial donations to the Alzheimer’s Association in his memory.
