Janet Garrett

Janet “Grandma” S. Garrett died in Freeman Hospital on September 11, 2017 in Joplin, Missouri at the age of 74.

Janet is survived by her grandchildren, Joshua and Stephanie Sommer from Joplin, Missouri; and three sisters, Joyce Martin, Martha McRae, and Brenda Prauser.

Janet was born on March 6, 1943 in Baxter Springs, Kansas to William and Ruth Griffith. She was a loving mother to Amanda Sommer—her daughter—who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by a brother, James Ora Griffith. She spent many years with her long-time friend, Jim Hall. They both enjoyed the outdoors, traveling, crafting, and visiting flea markets. Janet worked for Eagle Picher within various capacities, and retired after 32 successful years.

Janet was an accomplished painter, often painting landscapes and portraits. She was a generous and talented individual who loved art and was passionate about capturing the beauty of the subjects she painted.

The family would like to thank her medical team, Dr. Keeslar, Dr. Yerramalla, Dr. Mokhtar, and Dr. Cox, as well as the nursing staff.

A memorial service is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 16, 2017 in the chapel of Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary, Joplin, with Joshua Sommer officiating.

Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary, Joplin, Missouri.
