Lee Sponsel

Lee Paul Sponsel, 90, of Carthage, Mo, passed away at Mercy Hospital in Joplin, Mo, on September 3rd, 2017, after a short illness.

Lee was born on March 5th, 1927 in Walnut, Ks to Earnest Sponsel and Bessie Murdock. He was a WWll veteran that served in the U.S. Navy as Seaman First Class from 1945-1946.

Lee married Gladys Lorraine Havlena on August 22nd, 1947 in Richmond, California. Together they had five sons, Gary, Daryl, Neil, Jeff and Patrick. Lee and Lorraine moved to Kansas in 1982 where they resided until moving to Carthage, Mo in 2007.

Lee loved hunting and fishing his entire life. He was a very adventurous man who learned to ride a motorcycle at the age of 75. He rode in many benefits and parades and was still out riding this past year until he became ill, riding was one of his favorite passions.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years Lorraine Sponsel, and his two oldest sons, Gary Sponsel and Daryl Sponsel.

Survivors include three sons, Neil Sponsel (California), Jeff Sponsel (Missouri), Patrick Sponsel (Kansas), 10 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandson.

Visitation and Rosary, will be held at the Friskel Funeral Home in Frontenac, Ks at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 8th. Mass will be held at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frontenac, Ks at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Sept 9th. We invite all of those that would like to ride, to join the procession to Mount Carmel cemetery in Frontenac following the services. Condolences may be left at www.bathnaylor.com.
