May Fogerson

(From Mason-Woodard Mortuary)

May M. Fogerson, age 88 of Joplin, MO. passed away early Wednesday, December 23, 2020 at Mercy Hospital following a long illness. It was only fitting that our mother would pass at Christmas time because she loved all things Christmas.

She was a giver; she would spend her last nickel to make sure her children and grandchildren got what they wished for without expecting anything in return. She taught us many life lessons along the way but most importantly, how she loved each of us unconditionally. Even when her time was drawing near, mom was consoling her oldest granddaughter by telling her: “not to cry it will be ok.”

May was born May 13, 1932, in Joplin, the daughter of Clyde and Bonnie (Heiskell) Hunzeker. She has been a lifetime area resident except when she was relocated to Webb City after the 2011 tornado.

She graduated from Joplin High School and the former Joplin Business College. She went to work for Newman’s Department stores ending a long career as Personnel Manager only after the store's closing. She was a long-time member of Forest Park Baptist Church where she sang at weddings and funerals for many years.

Mom loved to play bridge and board games with her grandchildren. She was fiercely competitive and called the kids out when she caught them cheating. She was the greatest mother, grandmother, mother-in-law and friend and any family would hope to be blessed with. She will live in our hearts forever.

She married Robert B. Fogerson on November 7, 1951, he proceeded her in death in 1990. Survivors include a son; Robert Michael and wife Cecelia of Joplin, daughter; Teresa L. Giarratano and husband Thomas of Joplin, a brother; James Hunzeker of Ft. Gibson, OK, five grandchildren; Christen Lee (Faron), Dr. Michelle Jordan (TR), Anthony Giarratano, Dr. Stephanie Keeley (Dan), Samuel Giarratano and fiancé Isabel Click, and five great-grandchildren; Wyatt, Roselyn, Benjamin, Frankie and Jack.

A memorial mass of Christian burial has been scheduled for 10:30am Tuesday, December 29, 2020 at St. Peter the Apostol Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends during a time of visitation at the funeral home from 6-7 pm Monday evening. In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions can be made in memory of May to St. Peter’s Outreach House.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Mason-Woodard Mortuary and Crematory.
