(From Midland Cremation Society)Nancy Ruth Daugherty, 84, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 21, 2025, at Prairie Mission Retirement Village in Saint Paul, Kansas.
Born in Frederick, Oklahoma, on May 1, 1941, Nancy was the daughter of Ralph and Hazel (Heston) Heaton. She spent her early years in Frederick before moving to Carthage, Missouri, and eventually settling in Chanute, Kansas. Nancy was graduated from Chanute High School in 1959 and later pursued further education, earning an Associate’s degree from Neosho County Community College in 1991.
On August 14, 1967, Nancy was united in marriage to Antone Joseph (Tony) Daugherty in Yates Center, Kansas. Together, they made their home in Chanute and raised two children, imparting lessons that will last through generations: kindness is meant to be shared, obstacles are meant to be conquered, love is unconditional, and fun should always be had.
Nancy had a deep love for family that was present from an early age. As a child, she looked forward to visits from her aunts and uncles and all her cousins—especially Kathleen. She cherished fond memories of visiting Kathleen in Kansas City, and their bond remained close throughout her life. She also loved Cindy, Sheila, Linda, Chuckie, and his wife, Patty, and she enjoyed frequent phone calls with them to hear about their families and to share her latest discoveries in family genealogy—a passion she pursued with enthusiasm and care.
Nancy was devoted to her family, and known by all for her kind heart and generous spirit. Her family and friends were always a central part of her life, and she was a source of strength and love to those around her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tony Daugherty; her parents, Ralph and Hazel Heaton; her brother, Ralph Heaton Jr.; her nephew, Keith Heaton; grandson-in-law, Tillman Sharp; and great-granddaughter, Chandler Sharp.
Nancy is survived by her daughter, Melissa Carpenter and her husband, Dan, of Tuskahoma, Oklahoma, and her son, Antone (Tony) J. Daugherty II of Pittsburg, Kansas. She is also survived by her niece, JoBeth Bracy; and by her grandchildren: Raegan Guerin and her husband, Rus, of Girard, Kansas; Kevin Carpenter, of Pittsburg, Kansas; Alyssa Sharp of Tuskahoma, Oklahoma; and Lindsy Carpenter of Yukon, Oklahoma. Nancy’s great-grandchildren include Natasha Monjeau and her husband, Robert, Nick Guerin, Austin Cacoulidis, Alora and Willow Carpenter, and Linkin Sharp. She also leaves behind great-great-grandchildren Morgan Guerin and Alex Guerin-Williams.
In accordance with Nancy’s wishes, no funeral services are planned. In remembrance of her love for reading and learning, the family suggests supporting your local library as a tribute to her passion for education.
