John Jacobus McAfee, age 90, of Mt. Vernon, Missouri, passed away at 2:50 a.m. on Wednesday, January 10, 2018, at his home. He was born June 13, 1927, in Springfield, Missouri, the son of John E. and Marguerite (Brekenfeld) McAfee.
John was raised and educated in Springfield, Missouri, and graduated from Central High School with the class of 1945. Soon after graduation he joined the United States Navy where he was a veteran of World War II. After returning home he and his wife Elza made their home on a dairy farm near Chesapeake, Missouri, where they farmed for 70 years. He was a member of the Central Assembly of God Church in Springfield.
On July 26, 1947, he married Elza Rust in Springfield, Missouri.
John is survived by his wife of 70 years, Elza; one son, John McAfee, Jr. and his wife, Diana, of Carthage, Missouri; two granddaughters, Michelle Buchanan and her husband, Rob, of Carthage and Jennifer Maag and her husband, Tom, of Highland, Illinois; two great-grandsons, Aiden and Keegan of Carthage and two great-granddaughters, Emma and Lizzy of Highland, Illinois.
His parents, John and Marguerite and his brother, David McAfee, preceded him in death.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 13, 2018, at the Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. Visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 a.m. on Saturday, in the funeral home. Online condolences may be shared at www.FossettMosherFuneralHome.Com.
