Phyllis O'Connell

Phyllis Mardelle O’Connell, 84, of Frontenac, passed away at 6:20 p.m. Sunday, January 14, 2018, surrounded by her family.

She was born May 20, 1933 at Coffeyville, Kansas, the daughter of Carl Alva and Dorothy Janet (VanBrabant) Wilson. She was a lifetime area resident and graduated from Pittsburg High School and Kansas State Teachers College, now PSU.

On June 20, 1954, she was united in marriage to Patrick John O’Connell at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. He preceded her in death on April 14, 2015.

Mrs. O’Connell taught kindergarten and second grade at Skelly Elementary in El Dorado and Washington and George Nettels Elementary in Pittsburg, before devoting herself to raising and enjoying her family.

Membership was held in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Survivors include a son, Sean O’Connell and his wife, Kindra of Pittsburg; four daughters, Michelle Rondeau and her husband Mark of Great Bend, Kansas, Maureen Hughes and her husband, William of Joplin, Missouri, Milissa Brunetti and her husband, Rick of Topeka, Kansas and Jennifer Brunetti and her husband, Lee of Frontenac; sixteen grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a sister, Norma Broome, and a grandson, Nicholas Brunetti.

A Memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday (Jan 20) at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Fr. Tom Stroot as celebrant. A parish rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Brenner Mortuary, where the family will receive friends following until 8:00 p.m. The family suggests memorials be given to the Ronald McDonald House.
