Bert Holloway

Elbert D. 'Bert' Holloway, age 76, Joplin, passed away at 1:10 a.m. Thursday, February 28, 2019 at Freeman West Hospital.

Bert was born May 1, 1942 in Peoria, Illinois to the late Elbert E. Holloway and Dorothy M. Carr Holloway.

Bert served three tours in Vietnam with the United States Marine Corps, serving from 1959-1963 and again from 1963-1969. He was awarded several citations and decorations including, the Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Sharpshooters Medal; Combat Action Ribbon and the Navy Unit Citations Vietnam Campaign Medal.

He joined the United States Army in 1976 and retired as Captain in 1986. While in the Army, Bert was awarded the National Defense Service Medal; Armed Forces Reserve Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Vietnam Presidential Unit Citation; Vietnam Service Medal; four Bronze Service Stars; the Vietnam Campaign Medal; the Army Commendation Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters and the Meritorious Service Medal.

Following his distinguished military career, Bert worked as school teacher in Central and Northeast Missouri, an administrator at Fort Leonard Wood Hospital, a security officer at Camp Doha, Kuwait and as a direct support professional at Chariton Valley Association in Kirksville.

Bert was a member of the Marine Corps League and the Carthage VFW Post #2590, where he served as a Service Officer. He was a member of the Kirksville Lodge #105, AF & AM, where he served as past worshipful master. Bert attended church at Grace Community Bible Church, Kirksville, for many years.

In his spare time, Bert enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing pool and Texas Hold 'em and helping Veterans receive the benefits they deserve. He had many friends and will be missed by all who knew him.

He married Lola Jean ‘Jeanie’ Slaughter on March 9, 1961 in Kirksville. She preceded him in death on October 5, 2015.

Bert was also preceded in death by a sister, Esther Wheeler; and a brother, Lloyd Eads.

Survivors include two sons, Wayne Holloway and wife, Debbie, Killeen, Texas, Lloyd Holloway and wife, Jutta, Carl Junction; two daughters, Sandra Dixon and husband, Brent, Rolla, Debra Stroud and husband, Robert, Battlefield, Missouri; two brothers, Keith and Don Holloway, Illinois; one brother-in-law, Bennie Wheeler; nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild; and a niece, Pam Ridgeway of Arkansas; several other nieces and nephews and extended family.

Graveside services are planned for Friday, March 15 at 3:00 p.m. at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Springfield. A celebration of life is planned for a later date at the VFW Post #2590, Carthage. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Missouri Veterans Home, 1600 South Hickory Street, Mount Vernon, Missouri, 65712.
