Sylvia Shields

Sylvia Shields, 83, of Wichita, and a former resident of Erie and Parsons, died at
10:06 p.m., Thursday, February 28, 2019 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

She and her twin brother were born December 23, 1935, at Independence, to William Ivan and Jessie Mildred (Utz) Cain. Her mother died when she was nine years old and from the age of ten she was raised by her father and stepmother, Emma Powers Cain.

Sylvia attended Parsons schools and graduated from Parsons High School and Parsons Junior College. She and Everett Shields were married in Parsons on June 2, 1956. They moved to Erie in 1962 when he was transferred there by the Gas Service Co. He preceded her in death on August 3, 1995. She returned to Parsons briefly before moving to Wichita in 2010.

She enjoyed working with children and operated a daycare business in her home and also was a seamstress. She enjoyed sewing, quilting and hand crafts. 








Surviving are a son, Brian Shields (Rhonda) of Joplin; a daughter, Janet Shields Breiner, of Wichita; four grandchildren, Lindsay Jervis (Ben) and their children Ava and Ellie, of Wichita, Cory Hageman, of Wichita, Jackson Shields, of Parsons and Abby Shields, of Joplin; her twin brother, William “Bill” Cain (Sue) of Lincoln, CA. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Richard “Rick” Shields and a grandson, Matthew Hageman.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Parsons, with Jay St. Clair officiating. Burial will be in the Harmony Grove Cemetery, west of Dennis. Friends may call at the funeral home at their convenience after 1 p.m., Sunday. Memorials are suggested to God’s Resort or to the Catholic Care Center.
