Beth Ruddick

(From Campbell Lewis Funeral Home)

Beth Ruddick, a highly experienced nurse and nursing professor, died unexpectedly last month at her ``retreat’’ farm in rural Saline County, Missouri.

She was 67.

Born in Neosho, she was educated in nursing in Springfield and Columbia, Missouri. For more than 35 years she worked in a variety of nursing settings in Springfield, Columbia, Marshall, Sedalia and Brownsville, Texas.

With her Master’s of Science degree in nursing from the University of Missouri-Columbia, she shared her love of nursing while teaching advanced nursing, including psychiatric care, for nine years at Ozark Technical Community College, Central Methodist University and Columbia College.

Much of Beth’s career focused on assisting geriatric patients with psychiatric needs. She also worked as a hospice nurse.

She helped others in their toughest times even as her two children slept in her car.

She thrived in that stressful environment but retreated to her farm to relax. There during her first time living there full-time she milked a cow morning and night and cared for a flock of chickens, sharing the milk and eggs with appreciative neighbors.

Always active, at a later time in her career she enjoying taking lengthy nature hikes, including in the challenging trails of the Arkansas Ozarks.

She is survived by two children, Brian Smith, Billings, Missouri, and Reagan Griffin, Omaha, Nebraska, and five grandchildren. She is also survived by three brothers, Eck Ruddick, Tulsa, Oklahoma, Bill Ruddick, Phoenix, Arizona, and Rock Ruddick, Neosho, Missouri, and a sister, Margaret Hood, Kansas City. As well as her loyal German Shepherd, Roger.
