Beverly Summers

Mrs. Beverly Jane Summers, 50, of Sarcoxie, Missouri passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2020 at Mercy Hospital Joplin, surrounded by her loving family.

Beverly was born on December 29, 1969 in Carthage, Missouri to the union of the late Kenneth and Joyce (Ficher) Patrick. She was a 1988 graduate of Sarcoxie High School. She later furthered her education, earning her Associate Degree.

On March 31, 1986 she was united in marriage to James Summers, Sr. Together they shared thirty-four years. For several years she worked as a cashier for Express Truck Stop in Sarcoxie. She had also worked for Diamond Fire Department and a First Responder for Newton County. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and always had a bag of candy for them. She also enjoyed parks, care riding and spending time with her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Gary Patrick; sister, Saundra Patrick; sister-in-law, Teresa Patrick; and niece Kelsee Patrick.

Beverly is survived by her husband, James, of the home; children; Elizabeth Blunkall (Brandon) Springfield, Alice Michael (Nick) of Granby, James Summers, Jr. (Lacey) of Sarcoxie and Saundra Dunham (Terry) of Jasper; grandchildren, Jaden Blunkall, Athena Blunkall, Hunter Virture, Dakota Virture, Michael Nyx, Bentley Summers, Gabriella Dunham, Bryce Dunham and Natalia Dunham; several adopted grandchildren; eleven siblings; her little dog Pinkey; as well as a host of other family and friends.

Sue Means

Mrs. Gloria Sue Means, 73, of Joplin, Missouri, departed this life on Monday, March 30, 2020, while at Freeman Hospital West in Joplin, Missouri, after a short illness.

Sue entered this life on September 6, 1946, in Stella, Missouri, the first of three children born to the late Robert and Roberta (Cowan) Studivan. She was a 1964 graduate of Webb City High School.

On June 28, 1965, she was united in marriage to the love of her life Glen William Means and to this union two children were born. They resided in Kansas City for thirteen years before returning home in 1978. Sue was a bookkeeper throughout her life. She was employed by Sugar Creek Designs from 1982 until 2017. She was currently working as a bookkeeper for the Joplin Rental Center and B.J.'s Mini Mart. 

She loved the Webb City community. She was a member of the Webb City Chamber of Commerce, the president of The Mining Days Committee and was a former city councilwoman. She was of the Baptist faith. Her favorite verse was John 3:16. 

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, her grandchildren were her pride and joy. Sue was a fierce, resilient and loyal person who spent her entire life caring for others. She had a spunky, fun-loving and infectious personality who loved a good joke and enjoyed spending time playing slots at the casino.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of fifty-three years, Glen Means on October 24, 2018; and a brother, Gary Studivan.

Sue is survived by her two children, Bryan Means and wife, Susan, of Neosho and Stephanie Cowan and husband, Kyle, of Carl Junction; eight grandchildren, Jake, Josiah, Joshua, Jessica, Eric, Kylie, Carson, and Addisen; five great grandchildren, Carson, Bryan, Carter, Easton and Olivia Sue; a sister, Jean Neihoff of Ozark, Missouri; as well as a host of other family and friends. She was so loved and will be greatly missed.

Graveside services are 1:00 p.m. Monday, April 6, 2020 at Cowan Cemetery near Powell, Missouri with Vera Probert, her aunt officiating. Those honoring her life by serving as pallbearers are Bryan Means, Jake Means, Josiah Means, Joshua Means, Carson Cowan and Kyle Cowan. A memorial service to honor her life will be announced at a later date. Memorial contributions can be made to the Ronald McDonald House Mercy Springfield in honor of the care given to great grandson Easton c/o the funeral home. Alvin Smith

Alvin Lee Smith, age 75, passed away at 6:09 pm, Monday, March 30, 2020 at Mercy Hospital, Joplin, MO.

Mr Smith was born April 8, 1944 in Joplin, MO. His parents were Samuel and Belma (Clark) Smith. He returned to Joplin in 1969 from Bell Gardens, CA.

Alvin was a veteran of the U S Army, serving from 1966 – 68. He worked as a baker/mixer at Sunshine Bakery, Joplin, MO for a number of years. He was a member of the Spring City Church of Christ and the Bakers Confectionary Union. His favorite pastime was fishing.

Alvin was married to Diane McKnight on August 5, 1964 in Carthage, MO. She survives.

Additional survivors include one son, Walter Smith, Ava, MO; two daughters Gina Martin, Colorado Springs, CO, and Leanne Hand (husband, Preston), Joplin; two sisters, Jo Allene Brannon (husband, Charles) and Kathy Stone, Galena, KS; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Keith Hartley, and 2 sisters, Irene Mullins and Shirley Hasse.

He was entrusted to Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, KS for cremation. No services are scheduled.

Roscoe Wright

Roscoe Harry Wright, 90 of Mindenmines, Missouri passed away Tuesday, March 31, 2020 at his home. He was born January 6, 1930 in Conway, Missouri to Fred Sherman and Artie (Dill) Wright.

Roscoe was a retired farmer.

Roscoe was united in marriage to Barbara Hill on October 12, 1961. She survives. 

Other survivors include, two sons, Jerald Wright, and Kenneth Wright. Three daughters, Judy Tendick, Sandy Valentine, and Patricia Ryan. Two sisters, Wilma Wright, and Sue Kime. Thirteen grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Michael Crumbliss

Michael James Crumbliss opened his eyes to a new home on Tuesday where he was to be greeted by his mother Peggy Cross Crumbliss, father James Junior Crumbliss, brother Patrick Wayne Crumbliss, and other loved ones inside the gates of Heaven.

Born on June 9, 1947, he passed into the next phase of his life at the age of 72. He married Carole Sue Morgan Crumbliss on June 27, 1970 and continued to live and love with her for nearly 50 years.

Mike, the father to children Jennifer Thomas (Wayne Neal) of Duenweg and Adam Crumbliss (Angie Giddings) of Columbia, had resided in Joplin for most of his life.

He treasured most his opportunities to laugh with and love his grandchildren, Joe Thomas, Jared Neal, Katelyn Neal, Emily Crumbliss, Caroline Crumbliss, and great-granddaughter Kaiya Rae Thomas. In his passing he leaves behind numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and other loved ones.

Mike lived an enriched life marked by service to his community, laughter, and a hunger to share experiences with others. Crumbliss was involved with various service and charitable organizations including receiving his Eagle Scout Award from Boy Scouts of America. He was a 1965 graduate of Joplin High School. Throughout his life he had been active in the American Heart Association, Joplin Jaycees, Ozark Little League, the Joplin Traffic Commission, and others. In later years, he served as Chairman for both the Joplin Metro Credit Union and the Missouri Motor Carriers Association.

Mike was a fan of the Beatles and all things Disney. He attended college at Pittsburg State and received his B.S. degree from Missouri Southern State College. He worked for various companies throughout his life, spending his largest tenures at Tri-State Motor Transit and Leggett & Platt in their transportation division.

In accordance with Mike’s wishes, his remains are to be cremated and buried at Stone Cemetery in Jasper County in a private family service. In lieu of flowers, Mike requested that donations be directed to the Joplin Schools Foundation or to charities of the donor’s choice.

Jeremiah Dubbs

Dr. Jeremiah Michael Dubbs of Bella Vista, Ark., passed away at 48 years old, March 10, 2020. He was born June 24, 1971 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and was raised by his paternal grandparents Johnny Dubbs and Joann Dubbs (nee Baumer).

One of his proudest achievements was being the first in his very large family to go to college and achieve his Doctor of Philosophy degree (2009). 

He credited his pursuit of knowledge to his grandfather who took him to the library beginning at a young age. Not only was he an intellectual and an admired educator for several years at Northwest Arkansas Community College and Crowder College, but he was also an accomplished product designer at Outdoor Cap in Bentonville, and creative in other media. 

Dr. Dubbs is survived by his loving wife Stephanie Lewis of Bella Vista and his son Austin Dubbs of Fayetteville, Ark., of whom he was very proud. 

Dr. Dubbs' final wishes were that he be cremated, and his ashes scattered in a private ceremony. A memorial event will be scheduled for a time closer to summer.

Janice Walker

Janice Marie Walker, age 81, Joplin, passed away on Monday, March 30, 2020 at Spring River Christian Village.

Janice was born March 5, 1939 in Lawton, Oklahoma, daughter of the late Cecil Eugene Griggs and Inez Hunt Griggs.

She grew up in Lawton, and worked most of her life in crop harvesting in California, Oklahoma, Texas, and Arkansas. She later worked as an waitress in the Lawton area. She was a member of Central Christian Center of Joplin.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl D. Walker, who passed away on January 22, 2012 ; grandsons, Rocky Walker, Kenny Rickey, and Dustin Walker; sister, Sharon Griggs; brother, Pete Duncan.

Survivors include her children, Joyce Tallant of Joplin, Harold Dean Walker of Springfield, Shawndra Marie Walker, Robert Walker and wife Tina, and Roberta Walker all of Joplin; 20 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Graveside service will be Thursday, April 2, 2020 at 2;00 p.m. at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Doug Wilkerson officiating and Tim Walker, Brandon Walker, Jack D. Daniels, Johnny Walker, Chris Britt serving as pallbearers.
