Bert Bitzenberg

Charles Bitzenberg, known to many as Bert, passed away on July 30, 2026, in Joplin, Missouri, after an extended illness. He was 82 years old.

Born on June 26, 1944, in Carrollton, Missouri, Bert lived a life marked by kindness, curiosity, and steady devotion to the people and causes he held dear. He was the son of Arthur and Margaret (David) Bitzenberg, both of whom preceded him in death. From an early age, he carried the values of hard work, faith, and service that would remain with him throughout his life.







Bert graduated from Carrollton High School in 1962 and went on to continue his education at the New York Institute of Photography. He also earned several certificates in support of his career as a lab technician, reflecting the analytical mind and careful attention to detail for which he was known. His education and professional training helped shape a life of purpose and accomplishment.

He worked for Freeman Hospital as a lab technician, where his dependable nature and thoughtful approach made him a valued member of the team. In addition to his work in the medical field, Bert also served as a press photographer, a role that allowed him to combine technical skill with an eye for capturing meaningful moments. He approached both professions with dedication and pride. Bert was an avid bird watcher.

Bert was a Christian and was formerly a member of Forest Park Baptist Church of Joplin. His faith was an important part of his life and guided the way he treated others. He was also a founding member of the Heart of America Scout Council and volunteered his time for local conservation parks, demonstrating a lifelong commitment to youth, nature, and community service. He was honored as a Hall of Fame member with IFPO, a recognition that reflected his professional excellence and lasting contributions.

Those who knew Bert will remember him as kind, adventurous, and analytical. He had a thoughtful way about him and a genuine interest in the world around him. Whether through his work, his volunteer efforts, or his friendships, he left a lasting impression on many lives. He valued meaningful connections and was blessed with longtime friend Nancy Carrillo and husband, Paco of Joplin, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Jequita "Suzy" Bitzenberg and Nancy Bitzenberg, both of whom were important parts of his life. Their memories remained close to him, and he carried them with him in the years that followed.

Graveside services are planned for Thursday, August 6, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at Summit Cemetery in Mt. Vernon, Missouri. A time of visitation will take place on Wednesday, August 5, 2026 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m at Parker Mortuary.
