Sgt. Carl H. Swartz, Sr. 82, of Gardner, KS, passed away at 7:30 a.m. Monday, April 17, 2017, at his home. He was born on July 8, 1934, to Charles and Nora Swartz. He attended Eugene Fields School and later moved to Cherokee, KS, where he graduated in 1952. He then joined the US Air Force where he was promoted to Staff Sgt. And was a Firearms Instructor, where he spent the next 7 years. He married Rubie Briggs in Oklahoma City, OK, in 1958. She preceded him in death on March 25, 2011.
After returning to the Pittsburg area, he owned and operated the Swartz Hamburger Heaven, and with his brothers and father, operated the Swartz County Ambulance, the Service Cab Company, and The Little Grill Café. He became involved with Babe Ruth Baseball and managed several teams in Pittsburg. After moving to Olathe, KS, in 1977, he was employed at the KUMC Police Department, where he maintained the position of Sgt. and Firearms Instructor, where he received a Meritorious Award for and Exceptional Act Unaware of Great Personal Danger in 1985, presented by the Kansas Association of Chiefs of Police. At that time he stayed involved in Babe Ruth Youth Baseball. He spent a total of 35 years in the Babe Ruth Organization. He finished his career as the District Commissioner of the District #7. After retirement from KUMC in 1991, he joined the Volunteer Services at KUMC, and was awarded for 4,000 hours of Volunteer Services. He was a member of the A.F. and A.M. Masonic Lodge in Girard, KS, and served as the Master of the Lodge in 1976, and the Worthy Patron of Eastern Star, Electra Chapter of Girard, KS, in 1976 and also served as a Rainbow Dad. He was also a member of the Mirza Shrine.
He is survived by his children, Sherry Porter of Branson, MO, Curtis Swartz and his wife, Julie of Gardner, KS, Carla Swartz of Gardner, KS, Carolyn Mynatt and her husband, Ron of Joplin, MO, and Carl "Chip" Swartz, Jr. and his wife Kristin of Gardner, KS; 18 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Carl was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and two brothers, Charles and Kenneth Swartz, and a daughter, Mary Kalsowski Swartz.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 21, at the Brenner Mortuary with Pastor Steve Dighton officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. prior to the start of the service on Friday and from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. after the service at the Masonic Temple 3105 N. Joplin, Pittsburg. The family suggests memorials be given to the Parkinson’s Center at the University of Kansas Medical Center, 3901 Rainbow Blvd Kansas City, KS 66160 and/or Olathe Youth Baseball, 885 S.
