Janice Southwick

(From Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary)

Janice Southwick (Jones) passed away on June 7, 2024 at age 82 at her home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, while surrounded by her family. She was the beloved wife of Bennie, a devoted mother to Kim and Kevin, a loving grandmother and great-grandmother, and a passionate educator to thousands. Janice was a pillar of grace, love, and strength to all who knew her.

Janice is survived by her husband Bennie Southwick, with whom she recently celebrated her sixty (60) year wedding anniversary, in addition to her daughter Kimberly Martinez (Ray), son Kevin Southwick (Cookie), grandchildren Alec Martinez (Pfeifer) and Anna Martinez, great-grandchildren Charlie and Canon, her brother Russell Jones Jr. (Dona), nephew Jeremy Jones, and niece Christie Ruhl (Chris), and her beloved first cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents Russell G. and Fern M. Jones.

Janice was born on July 27, 1941 in Kansas City, Missouri, and spent her formative years in Parkville, Missouri. She obtained her Bachelor’s Degree (University of Central Missouri), a Master’s Degree (Southwest Missouri State University) and Specialist in Education Degree (Ed.S.) (Pittsburg State University).

Like both her parents before her, Janice was an educator and ultimately had an accomplished career with Joplin Missouri Public Schools. During her thirty-seven (37) year public education career, highlighted by twenty-six (26) years with Joplin Public Schools, Janice impacted countless lives as a teacher, principal, and director of the Gifted Education Program.

Outside of her career, Janice found joy in being a devoted mother, wife, and grandmother. She had a passion for traveling, reading, cooking, and leading in her community, including in her role as the first woman President of Joplin’s Twin Hills Country Club. Janice spent her final years in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and passed her love for Santa Fe on to her family.

A service to celebrate Janice’s life will be held on Tuesday, June 18 at 2:00 at Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary in Joplin, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, Janice’s family invites donations to Joplin Public Schools, to honor her legacy. Such donations can be made to Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary, which will facilitate a single donation in Janice’s name to Joplin Public Schools.

Janice Southwick will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her legacy of love, warmth, and service will live on in the hearts of her family and all those she touched.
