Jim Smith

Jimmy Wayne Smith was born Christmas morning 1937 to Wallace and Marietta (Benefield) Smith in Ripley MS.

Jim's sister Helen often told that he was the Christmas present that year and they loved him. His siblings were and are Harold Smith (deceased), Eloise (deceased), Bill (Fenton, MI), Helen (deceased), Shirley (deceased), Peg (Panama City Beach, FL) and Dan Smith (Phoenix, AZ).

Jim married Margaret (Whitledge) on August 20, 1954. He often reminded us of the story that he had to borrow a car to get married. He adored her. Together they raised seven children. Jimmy Wayne, Jr (Sharon) of Liberal, MO, Douglas (Randi) of Oronogo, MO, Mark (Amy) of Liberal, MO, Kathy Miller (Keith) of Liberal, MO, David (Lynn) of Liberal, MO, Greg (Melissa) of Galena, KS, and Brian (Sabra) of Liberal, MO. He had twenty-nine grandchildren, forty-eight great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. Jim was a strong Christian man. He and Margaret accepted Jesus as their savior on Easter morning in 1971 and their lives and the lives of their children were forever changed. Jim loved to sing and he had an amazing voice, a loud, powerful voice that when you heard him sing you could feel his love for his Lord all through you. His favorite song "said" grace fought this battle and sin died here. Jim passed peacefully, surrounded by seventy members of his family. He was loved and will be missed by many. He surrendered to the ministry in 1977 and pastored several area churches.

Janice Roughton

Janice A. Roughton, age 80, of Joplin, Mo. passed away at 8:25 a.m. Thursday, June 22, 2017 at Mercy Hospital Joplin. Janice was born October 18, 1936 in Joplin and lived in the Joplin area most of her life. Janice worked over 20 years for Sam’s Club in Joplin, retiring in 2012. She was a graduate of Duenweg High School and was a member of the Wildwood Baptist Church.

Janice married Donald Roughton November 27, 1954 in Joplin. He preceded her in death on January 28, 2014. She was also preceded in death by a son, Jody Brian Roughton. Survivors include two sons, Kevin Roughton and wife Teresa, Webbers Falls, Ok., and Scott Roughton and wife Sueanne, rural Jasper, Mo., two brothers, Gayle Wells and wife Nina, Grove, Ok. and Greg Wells and wife Evelyn, Joplin, four grandchildren; Jody Roughton and wife Tysha, Chase Roughton and wife Stephanie, Lacey Roughton, and Aspen Waters and husband Cory and seven great grandchildren: Ada, Mitt, Radyn, Dia, Easton, and Kinley Roughton, and Hudson Waters.

Services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the Mason-Woodard Chapel with Vic Hailey, Minister, Officiating. Burial will follow at the Osborne Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jody Roughton, Chase Roughton, Cory Waters, Kevin Robbins, Bob Danner, and Steve Warfield. Visitation will be at 9:00 a.m. Saturday until the Service at the Chapel. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Mason-Woodard Mortuary of Joplin, Mo.

Alfred Burgert

Alfred Lee Burgert, 66, of Asbury, Mo., passed away at 6:15 p.m. on Sunday, June 18, 2017, at his residence. 

He was born on May 11, 1951, at Pittsburg, Kan., to Alfred Leland and Betty Jane (Koontz) Burgert. He graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1969 and later from Pittsburg State University where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. Al worked in banking in Pittsburg, Wichita, and York, Neb.. He was also a longtime real-estate agent in Pittsburg. 

Survivors include his mother, Betty Burgert of Pittsburg, Kan.; a brother, Philip L. Burgert of Asbury and Branson, Mo.; a sister, Maretta K. Jeuland and her husband Abel of Chicago, Ill.; a niece, Christine Ware of Gladwyne, Pa.; two nephews, Marc Jeuland (Shuwen) of Chapel Hill., N.C., and Eric Jeuland (Jane) of New Haven, Conn.; four great nephews and one great niece. Al was preceded in death by his father. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. The family suggests memorials be given to the National Kidney Foundation. Larry Richardson

Larry A. Richardson, 81, of Monett, Missouri, passed away on Tuesday, June 20, 2017, at Lacoba Nursing Home in Monett. Larry was born January 20, 1936, to Kenley and Kate (Lewis) Richardson in Monett. After graduating from Monett High School, he was a Monett city police officer and then worked as a tool and die machinist. After retirement, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was a Civil War enthusiast.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents and his brother James Lewis Richardson. He is survived by his children, Judy Richardson of Neosho; Price Richardson and his wife, Jennifer, of Springfield; their mother, Ruth Ann (Brown) Richardson of Monett; and granddaughters Ashleigh Hughes and Sydney Richardson of Springfield.

A memorial visitation will be held on June 27, 2017, Bennett-Wormington funeral home from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Memorial donations may be made in Larry’s name to Monett Area Sheltered Workshop, c/o Jackie Williams, P.O. Box 474, Monett, MO 65708.

Donald Wall

Donald F. Wall, 87, entered into rest on June 16, 2017 in Mt. Vernon, MO, following an extended illness.

Don was born Aug. 3, 1929 in Park Rapids, MN, the son of James H. and Hazel K. (Aleck) Wall. He entered the U.S. Air Force on Jan. 26, 1948 and served his country until his retirement as a Chief Master Sergeant in 1971. He loved his country and he loved the American flag. Following his retirement from the U.S. Air Force he was a water quality instructor at the Water and Wastewater Technical School and Crowder College. He enjoyed fishing, was a great cook and made the best pancakes ever, loved to travel, but first and foremost loved his family. He was a member of St. Canera’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and TREA. Don and Frances (Thompson) were married on Nov. 14, 1953 at Virginia and she preceded him in death on Oct. 18, 1990. 

He married Novene (Hood) Stanley on Aug. 26, 1995 at Kansas City, MO and she survives. Additional survivors include three children, Michael Wall of Springfield; Connie Lipscomb and husband, Charles of Springfield and Steven Wall and wife, Brenda of Ozark; one stepson, David Stanley and wife, Robin of Gladstone; seven grandchildren, Joshua and wife, Tiffany, Nathaniel, Annie and husband, Keith, Christian, Matthew and wife, Kelli, Courtney and husband, Alex and Micah; one step grandson, Grant and wife, Meagan; four great grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; one brother, Charles Wall of Oregon; two sisters, Ruth Miller of Virginia and Sally Lester of Minnesota; a sister in law, Ruby Thompson of Virginia and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers, Mike Wall and Leonard Wall and a great grandson, Keigan Michael Wall.

Helen Foley

Helen Verda (Dockery) Foley, age 91, of Carthage, Missouri passed away, Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at her home after a short illness.

Helen was born January 30, 1926 in Irwin, Missouri to Zella Beecher and Edna Mae (Harmon) Dockery. She graduated high school in La Jolla, California and lived most of her life in the San Diego, California area until moving to live with her son five years ago. In 1945, she married Henry Kenneth Doerr and he preceded her in death 1979. She then married John Thomas Foley and he preceded her in death November 2002. Helen was an avid golfer and her dog Micky 2 was the love of her life.

Helen leaves behind one son Kenneth Doerr and wife Dee, Carthage, Missouri; grandchildren, Kalyn Doerr, Travis Doerr, Gretchen and husband Stu Johnston, Dusty Doerr, and Brandy Mae Doerr, Blake and wife Jesika Broaddus, and Samantha Hare; great-grandchildren, Katie Selinski, Jake Johnston, Alex Johnston.

Preceding her in death were her two husbands, and a son, Brandon Keith Doerr in 2002; five brothers, Cal, Stan Howard, Loren, and Lee Dockery; three sisters, Minnie Dockery, Reba Owen, and Nadine Walters.

Graveside services are scheduled at Glen Abbey Cemetery, Bonita, California.

Peg Miller

Margaret (Peg) Ann Miller, 74, of Lamar, MO, formerly of Uniontown, PA passed away on Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at Barton County Memorial Hospital.

Peg, born on December 31, 1942, was the only child of Evelyn and Wilson Romesburg of Uniontown, PA. She graduated from Uniontown High School in 1960 and Grove City College in 1964 with degrees in English and French.

In 1965, Peg married her high school sweetheart, Michael L. Miller. From this union, they were blessed with three sons: Dr. Erik M. Miller of Lamar, Brett J. Miller of Lamar, and Dr. Kirk A. Miller of Kansas City, MO. They blessed Peg with six grandchildren: Brianna and Gabrielle, daughters of Dr. Erik and Brenda McDaniel Miller; Carmen and Wilson, daughter and son of Brett Miller and Marsha Swavely Miller; and Simon and Eva, son and daughter of Dr. Kirk and Stephanie Brown Miller.

Mike’s career as a chemical engineer moved the family around the country, but Peg always found a church home, a teaching job, and a home that was comfortable for the family and welcoming to all the neighborhood kids who frequently stopped by. She taught English, French, Spanish, and gifted classes over the course of her career, and even spent a few years substitute teaching.

Peg’s favorite activities were spending time with the Lord, traveling, and doting on her grandchildren. She attended as many of their activities as she could, whether it be locally, in Kansas City, or traveling to a meet. Having all her family together brought her great joy.

After 46 years of marriage, Mike passed away in January 2012.

Peg married Earl Shofler of Webb City in September 2016. With him, he brought a son, Shane Shofler, and daughter, Heather Stilley into the family as well as Heather’s daughters, Chase and Wren Stilley. Peg, or Granny as many people called her by now, just couldn’t stop smiling at all the blessings in her life.

Peg was an active member of the Oakton United Methodist Church, including teaching Sunday School for many years, singing on the Praise Team, and participating in the women’s group. She had a soft heart for those in need, and never hesitated to give of her time and talents.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Jun 23 at Oakton United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. at Daniel Funeral Home on Thursday, June 22.
