Lena Steele

Mrs. Lena Nora (Carr) Steele, 96, of Webb City, Missouri, departed this life on Wednesday morning, October 28, 2015, at St. Luke’s Care Center in Carthage, Missouri, after a recent decline in health.

Lena entered this life on June 8, 1919, in rural Newton County Missouri in the Marion Township (Pepsin area) the youngest of six children born to the late Hugh Elbert and Nora Jane (Powers) Carr. She was a lifelong resident of Webb City, Missouri and a 1937 graduate of Webb City High School. On January 9, 1942, in Webb City, she was united in marriage to Richard W. Steele and to this union three children were born. Throughout her life she was a hardworking and devoted homemaker. She was a sixty-three year member of Central United Methodist Church in Webb City, serving as church secretary for several of those years. She was also a member of the Eastern Star. Lena enjoyed gardening, spending time in her kitchen, attending church activities, working crossword puzzles and was a talented seamstress. She lived life by the Golden Rule and was thoughtful and kind to everyone she encountered, always seeing the greatness in each individual. She always conducted herself gracefully and tried to set a good example for her family members, especially her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of sixty years, Richard W. Steele; five siblings, Crystal Greninger, Ruby Martin Hilton and Warren, Harvey and Homer Carr.

Lena is survived by her three children, James Steele of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Diana Spencer and husband, Richard, of Golden, Missouri and Mary Wilson also of Lee’s Summit; six grandchildren, Symonne, Dax, Travis, Chad, Heather and Holly; eight great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services for Mrs. Steele are 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 2, 2015, in the Chapel of Hedge-Lewis-Goodwin Funeral Home with Rev. Clint Lambeth officiating. Burial will follow in the Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery in Joplin, Missouri. Those honoring her life by serving as pallbearers are Joe Porras, Travis Spencer, Dax Wilson, Jim Steele, Chad Wilson, Jason Barnes, Virgil Carr, Richard Spencer and Doug Corner. The family will receive friends at 1:00 p.m. on Monday in the funeral home chapel. On-line condolences may be sent to the family through our website www.hedgelewis.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials are being directed to Central United Methodist Church and contributions may be left at the funeral home.
