(From Parker Mortuary)Janice Kay Garrett, age 76, of Carl Junction, completed her earthly journey and entered the Gates into her eternal reward on Thursday, April 11, 2024, at her home.
Janice, daughter of the late Robert and Fern (Jones) Gilstrap, was born on February 11, 1948, in Webb City. She grew up and attended Joplin High School, graduating with the Class of 1966.
Her academic pursuits continued at Missouri Southern State University, where she attained her bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education. She also met the love of her life, Richard Garrett. They were united in marriage on July 11, 1970, in Joplin.
Together they lived in Poplar Bluff, Kansas City, and then in Connecticut for 33 years. During her time in Connecticut, Janice taught at Pioneer Valley Christian Academy. Eleven years ago, she and Richard moved back to the area to make their home. Janice loved to celebrate others, often reminding those of someone’s special day coming up. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Janice's life was a testament to her faith-filled spirit, her selfless nature, and her passionate dedication to education and AWANA ministry.
Survivors include her husband, Richard Garrett, of Carl Junction; daughters Jessica Martin, and her husband, Lee, of Egg Harbor Township, NJ, Sara Garrett, and Anna Garrett, both of Philadelphia, PN; her adored grandchildren, Ashleigh Martin, Ryleigh Martin, and Garrett Martin, all of Egg Harbor Township, NJ; her brother, William Gilstrap, and his wife, Linda, of Joplin; a sister-in-law, Sherry Gilstrap, of Lee’s Summit, MO; two brothers-in-law, Jim Dawson, and his wife, Cheri, of Webb City, and Gilbert Garrett, of St. Joseph, MO; and several nieces; nephews; and loved extended family members.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, May 10, 2024, with the family receiving friends for a time of visitation beginning at 10:00 AM until service time at 11:00 AM in the chapel at Forest Park Baptist Church, Joplin.
Memorial contributions in memory of Janice may be made to the Pioneer Valley Christian Academy, 965 Plumtree Rd. Springfield, MA 01119 or may be entrusted to the mortuary. Memorial services will be live streamed on the Parker Mortuary Facebook page.
