Rex Junior Marshall, age 96, a resident of Joplin, passed away Saturday, May 13, 2017 at the Communities of Wildwood Ranch.
Rex was born January 2, 1921 in Weir, Kansas, to the late Vernon and Effie Hall Marshall.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers, Dale and Bob Marshall; and five sisters, Pauline Merrick, Darlene Snyder, Kay York, Norma Trussell and Shirley King.
He served as staff sergeant in the 10th Mountain Division while in the Army during World War II, serving on Aleutian Island of Kiske held by the Japanese, after retaking the island, he was sent to Italy, seeing action in the battle of the Po River, Riva Ridge, and Mount Belvedere, earning the Bronze Star.
He married Bessie Osborn December 10, 1941 in Joplin. They enjoyed 57 years of marriage before she preceded him in death on December 23, 1998.
After his military service he joined the Joplin Fire Department, from 1945 to 1981, retiring at the rank of Chief from 1974 to 1981.
Rex was a member of the V.F.W.
In his spare time he enjoyed antique collecting.
Survivors include a daughter Vickie Deems and husband, Jerry, Joplin; one granddaughter, Mistie Sabapathy and husband, Ravi, Overland Park, Kansas; one grandson, Ryan Buchanan and wife Charity, Joplin; five great-granddaughters, Emily, Mira, Katie, Maya, and Abraya; and a sister, Delores Hochevar.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 20, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the Parker Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time. Burial will follow at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Joplin Fire Department Chaplain's Fund and may be left at the mortuary.
