Johna Goade

Johna Elizabeth (Craton) Goade was born September 5, 1937 on Oliver’s Prairie, near Newtonia, Missouri, the daughter of John and Alvira (Stevens) Craton. She departed this life on August 24, 2018, at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, following a short illness at the age of 80 years, 11 months and 19 days. 

 Johna attended Granby Schools, graduating in 1955. She married her childhood sweetheart, Harry Neil Goade on Aug. 22, 1959 and he preceded her in death on June 5, 2001. Johna began her working career at First National Bank in Neosho at the age of 19 and retired in 2002 from Southwest Missouri Bank. Johna loved music and the choir at Newtonia Baptist Church, singing solos and in quartets with Neil, Phyllis Trammel and Jim Riggs as well a part of the full choir. She often sang in community choir concerts as well as the First Baptist Church in Neosho. Johna was an avid genealogist and had traced her family roots back through each of her family lines. A highlight of Johna’s retired years was taking her only granddaughter, Sarah Goade to Scotland to the Craton Castle. Johna believed in living a life to help others. She volunteered in several service organizations, including Meals on Wheels, Soroptomist for Women Business Leaders and Oliver’s Prairie Friends Mission Group. She was a past member of the Newtonia Baptist Church where she served faithfully for many years. She then became a member of the First Baptist Church in Neosho and continued to serve her God. 

 Johna is survived by her son, John Neil Goade and his wife, Paula and her granddaughter, Sarah Goade; a dear friend, Roy Cochran and special friend, Cathy Sheehy. In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by her aunt Vera Ruth Scheer. 

 Services will be Wednesday Aug. 29, 2018 at 10 a.m. at the Clark Funeral Home Chapel in Granby, Dr. Todd Decker will officiate. Interment will follow in the Newtonia IOOF Cemetery and serving as pallbearers will be John Mark Johnson, Rob Goade, Larry Dahnke, Steve Goade, Mike Goade and Garrett Dowell. Lynn Gardner

Dr. Lynn Gardner, age 79, of Carl Junction, MO, passed away on Thursday, August 23, 2018, at 4:15 pm at Freeman Hospital. He was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis in 2000 and lived for 14 years after receiving a double lung transplant in 2004.

Lynn was born on March 4, 1939 in Mays, IN, the son of Wallace and Irene (Gilson) Gardner. He has lived in the Carl Junction area since 1973. He married Barbara Thompson on February 24, 1961 in Holyoke, CO. He graduated from Ozark Christian College with a Bachelor of Theology in 1961. Education was very important to Lynn. He furthered his education by earning another bachelor degree from California State University, Stanislaus, his master’s degree from Wheaton College in Wheaton, IL, and his Doctor of Education degree from the University of Arkansas. Lynn served as a minister at Shell City, MO, Severy, KS, Prairie Hill, MO, and Turlock, CA.

Lynn taught for six years at Central Christian College of the Bible, Moberly, MO. Then he taught at OCC for 34 years, seventeen of those years he was the Academic Dean. He retired from the college in 2006. Lynn has authored 10 books and several of them have been translated into Korean, Russian, Polish and Spanish. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; his son, Bryce Gardner and his wife Nancy of Santee, CA; his daughter, Kara Arnce and her husband Bob of Joplin; his daughter-in-law, Cean Gardner of Carl Junction; four grandchildren, Luke and Mark Arnce and Dane and Hope Gardner; two brothers, Phillip Gardner of Versailles, MO, Keith Gardner and his wife Alice of Shelbina, MO, his brother-in-law, and Sam Stone of Mason, OH. Lynn was preceded in death by his son, Mark Gardner in 1999, his brother, Greg Gardner and his sister, Gwendolyn Stone.

Funeral service will be Monday, August 27, 2018, at 10:00 am at the Christian Church of Carl Junction. Burial will be in the Carl Junction Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 2-4 pm at the Christian Church of Carl Junction.

Memorial contributions may be given to Literature and Teaching Ministries of Joplin or Ozark Christian College in care of the Mortuary.

Sherri Smith

Mrs. Sherri Ann Smith, 58, of Joplin, Missouri, formerly of Neosho, departed this life on Wednesday, August 22, 2018, at Freeman Hospital West in Joplin, Missouri, after months of declining health.

Sherri entered this life on March 28, 1960, in Smithville, Missouri, born to the union of the late Jesse and Essie (Horne) Miller. She graduated from Truman High School in Independence, Missouri, in 1978 and furthered her education at Crowder College in Neosho, Missouri. For over twenty years she was employed by New Visions as a Direct Support Professional. She enjoyed reading, playing bingo, watching her favorite TV shows and spending time with her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Karen Ruddick and Claudette Jones; and two brothers, Louis and Melvin Miller.

Sherri is survived by her two children, Damon Miller and wife, Rachel, of Webb City, Missouri and Shanna Smith of Joplin; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Doris Lawson of Joplin and Trenda Shaw of Jacksonville, Florida; two brothers, Mike Miller of Maysville, Arkansas and Paul Shaw of Shanghai China; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services for Sherri will be held on Monday, August 27, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. in the Anderson Chapel of the Ozark Funeral Homes. Burial will follow in the Cummings Cemetery in Tiff City, Missouri. Those honoring her life by serving as pallbearers are Mike Miller, Damon Miller, Alex Miller, Jerry Chatham, Alex Chatham and Chris McConn. Ted Reavley

Dr. Ted Allen Reavley DDS, age 71, of Lamar, Missouri passed away Friday, August 24, 2018 at Freeman Hospital West, after a short illness.

     Ted was born May 26, 1947 in Lamar to Dr. Jackson Watson Reavley Jr. DDS and Mildred Irene “Mickey” (Barben) Reavley. He graduated Lamar High School in 1965 and graduated UMKC in 1978 with his Doctorate of Dental Surgery. He then joined his father, Dr. Jack, in private practice. Dentistry was not only a profession for Ted but also a hobby which he greatly enjoyed. He was grateful for his patients and considered it a privilege to practice in his hometown. His son, Dr. Brian, looks forward to continuing the tradition. On June 1, 1974, he married Carol Diane Roberts at the First Baptist Church Lamar and together they raised four children.

     Ted was a member and Deacon at First Baptist Church Lamar, member and past president of the Lamar Rotary Club, member and past president of the Southwest MO Dental Society, Missouri Dental Association, and American Dental Association. He enjoyed hunting with his family and was a member of the “Hekarwee” Hunting Tribe. Ted also served in the Army National Guard. He loved spending time outside and worked diligently to develop the Northlake subdivision in Lamar. Ted was technologically savvy and was blessed with the ability to fix almost any computer problem at home or at work. Above all, the main focus of his life was his beloved family.  

     In addition to his wife Carol, he leaves behind two sons, Brenton Reavley DDS and wife Kristen, Parkville, Missouri and Brian Reavley DDS and wife Megan, Fremont Hills, Missouri; two daughters, Erin McNaught and husband Michael McNaught DDS, Nixa, Missouri and Brooke Reavley RN, Kansas City, Missouri. He took great pride in seven grandchildren: Zane Reavley; Halle, Claire, Grant, and Wyatt McNaught; and Ella and Jackson Reavley. He also leaves behind a niece, Stacy Gaier, Parker, Colorado and great niece, Maya Potter. Preceding him in death were his parents and a sister, Mary Nell (Reavley) Gaier.

     A memorial service will be held at 2 pm, Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at First Baptist Church Lamar. The family will receive friends from 1 pm until service time at the church. A private family burial will be in Lake Cemetery at a later date.

Donna Weston

Donna Ruth Weston, 62, Neosho, MO passed away August 24, 2018. Born June 30, 1956, the only daughter of Eugene and Wilma (Pogue) Weston, Donna was a lifelong Neosho resident. She worked as a laborer for several years at Crowder Industries. Donna was a member of Cave Springs Baptist Church and loved to go fishing.

Donna is survived by her mother, Wilma of Neosho; two brothers, Don Weston of Neosho and Charles Weston of Jenkins, MO; three nephews; two nieces; numerous other family members and many friends. She was preceded in death by her father and one brother, Steven Weston.

The family will receive visitors from 6 until 7 pm on Monday, August 27 at Clark Funeral Home Chapel of Memories in Neosho.
Funeral services will be held at 10 am on Tuesday, August 28 at Clark Chapel of Memories, Neosho. Dr. Jerry Seigel and Rev. Ron Bridges will officiate. Interment will follow at the IOOF Cemetery, Neosho.

William Bauernfeind

Mr. William S. Bauernfeind, age 86 years of Niles, Michigan died peacefully at 1:51 p.m. on Tuesday, August 21, 2018 with family gathered around at the Hanson Hospice Center in Stevensville, Michigan following a brief illness.

He was born on February 5, 1932 in Green Bay, Wisconsin to Arthur G. and Viola (Corbeille) Bauernfeind. He was graduated from Niles High School in 1950 where he developed remarkable skills on the baseball team as a pitcher, and then went on to play minor league baseball for several teams including the Cubs.

Bauernsfiend played for the Carthage Cubs in 1951, posting a 10-8 record and a .270 batting average.

He served in the United States Navy as a radioman, and was honorably discharged as a Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He returned to Niles, and began a 35 year successful career in retail automobile sales, first at the former Joe Hayden Ford at 11th and Maple, and then at the former Tyler-Linville Chevrolet (now Tyler Automotive) in Niles. He was featured in the May 28, 1973 issue of Time magazine as one of Ford’s top sales people for 1972.

Bill was an active member of Saint Mary Catholic Church in Niles, and an active member of the Niles-Buchanan YMCA for 40 years. He was a gifted salesman at the dealership and continued his talent for sales during retirement by buying and reselling a wide variety of items, earning him the nickname “Dollar Bill”. He also was an avid metal detector.

On November 7, 1953 in Niles he married his high school sweetheart, the former Barbara Anne Humphrey with whom he celebrated the remarkable Fifty-seventh anniversary of their wedding prior to her death on August 3, 2011. He was also preceded in death by his parents, and by Barbara’s parents Harry and Evelyn Humphrey and Barbara’s brother, Jerry Humphrey.

Surviving family includes their children, Michael (& Norma) Bauernfeind of Mishawaka, Indiana, and Mary (& Greg) Bierwagen and Martha (& Dave) Vogl, both of Niles; grandchildren, Mark (& Melissa) Bauernfeind, Ryan (& Oksana) Bauernfeind, Eric Bauernfeind, and Noah Vogl; great-granddaughters Mia and Anastasia Bauernfeind; and Bill’s brother, Arthur (& Dianna) Bauernfeind of Boston, Massachusetts and his daughter, Laura Wear.

The memorial mass for William Bauernfeind will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 27, 2018 at Saint Mary Catholic Church, 203 South Lincoln Avenue in Niles by the Rev. Christian Johnston of the parish. Committal Rites will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Niles, and will conclude with the Full Military Honors by the United States Navy Honor Guard and the American Legion Post #51 of Buchanan, Michigan.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Halbritter-Wickens Funeral Home, 615 East Main Street in Niles. Shirley Lamb

On August 11, 2018, Shirley Jean Lamb passed from this earth and joined her loved ones in Heavenly glory. A member of South Joplin Christian Church and Class of 1947 of Joplin High School, she touched many lives in the Joplin area with her generosity and service to others.

Shirley is survived by a daughter, Vicki Devers and her husband, Larry, as well as a son, Brad Lamb and his wife, Nancy. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Scott, Lisa,Kristi and Jenni, as well as six great-grandchildren.

A celebration of her life on Tuesday, August 21st, at 11:30 a.m. This will be held at the Joplin Association for the Blind, where she was a service member and board member. A private graveside service was held for family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Joplin Association for the Blind.
