William Edwards

William Clyde Edwards, 80, of, Bentonville, died January 26 at Legacy Village Hospice in Bentonville.

He was born August 24, 1938 in Rogers to Andrew Jackson Edwards and Minnie Elizabeth Neighbarger Edwards. He was a life long resident of this area and a US Air Force veteran of the Viet Nam era.

He married Nancy Reed at Bentonville in 1983. He was employed at Wal-Mart sign shop for twenty years, worked as a ranch hand at Jack's Ranch, was a cattle farmer, worked in maintenance for A-1 Pool service, and enjoyed fishing and camping. 

He is preceded in death by his parents; a son Jimmy Elam; three sisters, Elizabeth, Joyce, and Bessie; five brothers, Johnny, J.C., Billy, Jackie, and Jessie.

Survivors are his wife Nancy Edwards of the home; a son, Michael Edwards and wife Wendy of Carthage, Missouri; three daughters, Michelle Endicott and husband Curtis of Cartersville, Missouri, Cindy Singelton and husband Jimmy of Bella Vista, Jeannie Ferguson and husband Steve of Calwell, Kansas; a brother Robert Edwards and wife Joann of Little Kansas, Oklahoma; a sister, Sally Mae Fox of Springfield, Missouri; fourteen grandchildren and eighteen great- grandchildren.

Service is set for 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 29 at the Pea Ridge Church of Christ with Malcolm Scott officiating. Arrangements are by Sisco Funeral Home in Pea Ridge. Burial will be in Bentonville City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. before the service at the church.

George Nichols

George L. (Jack) Nichols Jr., age 90, of Joplin, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, January 25, 2019, surrounded by loved ones. He was born to George L. Nichols Sr. and Opal Farel on June 4, 1928 in Bakersfield, Missouri.

George graduated from Bakersfield High School in 1945 and taught at the high school level for a short time before moving to Benton Harbor, Michigan, where he worked at Whirlpool for 19 years and for Pinkerton Detective Agency. He moved his family to Joplin in 1967 and worked for Frisco/Burlington Northern Railroad for 25 years before retiring in 1993. George was a member of the Mt. Hope Church of Christ. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed collecting guns, fishing lures and tackle, coins, and glassware. You could often find him at the local auctions chatting with friends and new acquaintances. George loved to be outside in the sunshine raising vegetables and fruit in his garden, which he supplied his family and friends with for many years.

George married Bonnie Mae Blaylock on June 25, 1949 in Sodus, Michigan, and they spent 69 happy years together. Survivors include wife Bonnie; daughter Patricia (Gary) McElroy; three sons, David Nichols, Jeff (Sally) Nichols, Brian (Shelly) Nichols, all of Joplin; 9 grandchildren, Jay (Shawna) McElroy, Casey (Angie) McElroy, Chris Nichols, Lisa Nichols and Cherie Wallace, Ben (Noel) Nichols, Courtney (Steve) Gale, Nathaniel (Erin) Nichols, Zachary Nichols, and Lauren Nichols; 12 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. George is also survived by two brothers, Joe Nichols of Covington, Georgia, and Donald Nichols of Conyers, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers, James (Guy) Nichols and Joseph Nichols.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Mason-Woodard Chapel. Burial will be at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery following the service. Frank McReynolds will officiate. Pallbearers will be five grandsons, Jay McElroy, Ben Nichols, Zachary Nichols, Nathaniel Nichols, Steve Gale, and family friend, Shelby Howard.

The visitation will be 6-7:30 p.m. Monday at Mason-Woodard. Memorial contributions may be given to Mount Hope Church of Christ in care of the mortuary.

Jim Long

James “Jim” Long, of Seneca, Missouri, passed away January 25, 2019 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born December 2, 1951. On February 16, 1973 he married Marilyn Yeakey, she survives him.

Additional survivors include his children Jennifer Cummings and husband Cheyenne, Jim Long and wife Sherry and Jeff Long and wife Monica, all of Seneca. Six grandchildren Miranda Derrick (Matt), Dalton Cummings (Allison), Ashton Cummings, Cooper Long, Cambry Long and Jaden Long. Three great-grandchildren Kash and Kase Cummings and Addilyn Derrick. He is also survived by a brother Clovis Long (Deb), and two sisters Sandy Drake (Max) and Marsha Sarratt (Bill) and a host of extended family and many friends.

Jim owned and operated Seneca Express from 1975 to 1997. In the fall of 1997 he began working for American Tripoli, Seneca, Missouri, he retired in 2013. After retirement he was not one to sit around the house, he loved working around the farm, taking care of his cattle, his tractors and machinery and was always ready to help anyone that needed it.

He loved being outdoors playing ball, hunting or fishing. But the thing that he enjoyed most was coaching and later watching his children and grandchildren play a variety of sports. He coached baseball teams for several years and was a past president of the Seneca Athletic Club.

Jim was a member of the Stapleton Church of Christ, Joplin, Missouri.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents Claude and Violet Long, and grandparents Charles O & Minnie Long and Hoy R. and Nellie Bartlett and his father-in-law W. Scott Yeakey.

Visitation will be held Monday, January 28 from 6:00 to 7:00 pm at Seneca Christian Church. Services will be held Tuesday, January 29 at 10:00 am at Seneca Christian Church, with burial at Swars Prairie Church of Christ Cemetery, Seneca, Missouri.

Larry Warner

Larry Lee Warner, 79, of Pineville, MO, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2019 at 9:49 am. He was husband to his bride of 54 years, Nadine Warner.

Born May 17,1939 in Miami, Oklahoma, Larry was the oldest son of Lee & Marguerette (Jackson) Warner. He graduated high school in Miami, Oklahoma in 1957 and from NSU in Tahlequah, OK in 1961 with a degree in Business Education.

He also met and married his wonderful wife and partner, Nadine Munson, on June 27, 1964. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps. When he returned home he became employed at the McDonald County R-1 School District where he taught for 32 years, serving generations of McDonald County families. He truly loved every day he went to work. Post retirement, he stayed busy substitute teaching, but played a lot more golf, tennis, and traveled more, especially to the Destin area to enjoy his little home away from home during the winter.

Larry,or Chigger, as he was known to many of his students, was known for his wonderful sense of humor, his enduring smile, his sometimes stern look across the classroom, and his caring nature. He belonged to Pineville Methodist Church and a Snowbirds group in Destin, Florida. He enjoyed all types of sports and hanging out with his best friends Bob McCulley and Randy Smith, especially on the tennis courts or golf course! He truly loved being with his grandchildren, Jonathan White, Michael, Kathryn and Ryan Warner, Angie Gilmer (Chris) and Ashly Cochran (J.T.), and his great grandchildren, Kylea, Savanah, and Scarlet.

Larry is survived by Nadine Warner, his wife and partner for 54 years, and his children Deborah White and Dale, Michael Fontenot and Jolene, and Scott Warner and Pamela. He also leaves behind his sister Marlene (Hub) Dingess and Rodney, his sister-in-law Mary Warner, and countless extended family members. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Bill Warner.

To all of the friends and family that have stopped by over the past months, we know dad and the entire family truly appreciate your time and caring for dad. It brought a smile to his face.

The memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at Pineville Methodist Church in Pineville, Missouri.

Memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Pineville Recreation Center.

Joseph Weber

Joseph Donald Weber, 76, Neosho entered into rest on January 24, 2019 after an extended illness. 

Joseph was born December 6, 1942 in Omaha, NE to Joe Julius and Margaret Weber. Mr. Weber was a Coast Guard veteran and had been employed as a project engineer with Raytheon Industries.

He is survived by his son, Jason Weber and wife, Ginna of Arcadia, CA and twelve of his thirteen siblings: Elizabeth “Betty Jo”; James and wife, Shirley; Margaret “Peg” and husband, Kenneth; William; Michael and wife, Nancy; Thomas; Patricia; David and wife, Jennifer; Janice and husband, Thomas; Dorothy; Daniel and wife, Norma; and Timothy and wife, Gail. 

He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Clara “Babe”.

Cynthia Brotherton

Cynthia Louise Brotherton passed away at her Seneca home on January 24, 2019.

 She was born April 20, 1951 in Long Beach, CA to Richard and Dorothy (Hankins) Brotherton. Cynthia was a homemaker.

She is survived by her mother, Dorothy Marie and the father who raised her, Virgil Grotjohn of Neosho, MO; three children: Samantha Hoog of Joplin, MO, George Todd and wife, Kristen of Racine, MO, and William Todd of Texarkana, AR; four sisters: Sarah Malone of Bailey, CO, Vicki Hester of West Minister, CO, Virgie Popejoy of Arvada, CO, and Linda Kivett of Neosho; two brothers: Virgil Grotjohn and Richard Grotjohn, both of Neosho; seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Cynthia is preceded in death by her father, Richard Brotherton and brother-in-law, Greg Kivett, Sr.

Memorial services for Cynthia will be announced at a later date.

Carol Long

Carol S. “Collins” Long, 75, passed away Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at her home in Webb City with her husband, Bob, and family at her side.

Carol was born into humble beginnings on August 2, 1943 in Nevada, MO to Chester H. and Ruth “Rackley” Collins. Her early education was in a one-room school house. She graduated 8th grade from Friendship School, Barton County, MO. Carol went to Lamar High School where she was chosen homecoming queen her freshman year. She was a member of the National Honor Society and, upon graduation in 1961, she was offered a scholarship to the University of Missouri, Columbia. Instead, she chose to marry Bob Long, her one true love, on August 4, 1961.

In Carol’s early business career, she worked for Western Electric in Lee Summit, Lawn Boy in Lamar and seven years at various banks in Carthage and Joplin. Her 27-1/2 year career at Leggett & Platt in Carthage began in 1970 and progressed as per the following news release by the Company.
“In 1970, Carol Long joined Leggett & Platt as an Executive Secretary to our President, Harry M. Cornell, Jr. In that same year Leggett had record sales of $30 million.

“As L&P has grown, so has the complexity of our Chief Executive Officer and his staff. In 1985, recognizing that Carol Long was being asked to direct significant special projects and supervise staff, she was promoted to the job of Assistant to the Chief Executive. At that time, she relinquished her secretarial duties in order to devote more time to her increased managerial responsibilities.

“Today, Carol is in effect our “Chief of Staff”. With the help of others, Carol sees that the hundreds of inquiries to the Chief Executive’s office . . . from customers, investors, employees, applicants, entrepreneurs, legislators, presidents of other major companies, environmentalists and representatives of charitable foundations (to name a few examples) . . . receive thoughtful, timely and appropriate responses. When our Chief Executive’s heavy travel schedule takes him away, sometimes for a week or more, Carol manages and coordinates his on-going responsibilities.

“Carol’s professionalism and thorough follow-up have set an example followed by administrative personnel throughout Leggett & Platt. In recognition of the complexity of her management duties and outstanding job she’s done, Carol has been appointed Staff Vice President.”

During her tenure at L&P, Carol attended evening classes at Missouri Southern. She retired in 1997 after 27-1/2 years with L&P.

Carol was a member of the Peace Star Chapter of American Business Women’s Association, serving for 25 years in many areas, including president, secretary, and ways and means chairman. She was chosen as Woman of the Year of her local chapter and a candidate for woman of the Year nationally. She was also instrumental in organizing, implementing and hosting the National American Business Women’s Association Conference in Shangri La in 1990.

Carol is survived by her husband of 57 years, Robert M. Long; two sons, Randal Long (Nicky) of New Jersey, Jeff Long of Arizona; eight grandchildren, Reagen Long-Beaverson, Devon Long, Austin Long, Jacob Long, Abby Long, Ethan Long, Sam Long and Sadie Long; two sisters, LaNita Aldridge and Wanda Holcombe; and sister-in-law, Melva Collins.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Alvin Collins and Jerry Collins.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 28, 2019 at Ulmer Funeral Home. Funeral services will immediately follow. Burial will be at Memory Gardens in Lamar.
