Francis Vernest Morgan, age 83 of Joplin, passed away Tuesday, February 2, 2015 at Carthage Health and Rehabilitation, surrounded by his wife and kids.
Francis was born to Elmer and Christina Brunenmeyer Morgan May 9, 1932 in Marysville, Kansas. Upon death of his mother at three weeks old, he was raised in Joplin by his aunt and uncle, George and Edna Morgan and three cousins, James, Lewis and Roy, all now deceased.
Francis attended Joplin schools and joined the U.S. Navy from 1952-1956. Upon returning home, he graduated from Pittsburg State University as a Certified Licensed Machinist, he later retired from the Joplin Fire Department in 1987.
Francis married Martha Shoopman Jones on April 23, 1961 in Miami, Oklahoma, along with her children, Steven and Mary Ann. Together they had two daughters, Karla Jean and Karen Elaine. They have been blessed with 17 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
Francis has two sisters, Virginia Hamilton of Joplin and Verva Severns and husband, Elton of Lincoln, Nebraska; brother in-law, David and Cathy Shoopman, of Chicago, Illinois.
He is survived by his wife, Martha; daughters Karla Adams and husband, Rick of Carthage, Karen Mattice and Lonnie Sumners of Joplin; step children, Steven Jones and wife, Susan of Carl Junction, Mary Lankford and husband, Gary of Carl Junction; many nieces, nephews and extended family.
Francis was additionally preceded in death by his grandparents; 2 brother in-laws and a sister in-law, Bill and Marge Shoopman and Lynn Hamilton.
Francis loved his family and spending time with them, going to Branson, crafting and working on his yard, lawn mower, etc, all in his spare time.
Family will receive friends on Sunday from 3-5:00 p.m. at the mortuary. Cremation will take place following the visitation.
