Kathy Mitchell

Mrs. Kathleen “Kathy” Mitchell, 68, of Joplin, Missouri, departed this life on Friday afternoon, February 26, 2016, in the comfort of her home surrounded by her loving family.

Kathy began her earthly journey on December 17, 1947, in Wichita, Kansas, the only child born to the late Samuel Raymond and Eileen (Monckton) Atkinson. She was raised in Maize, Kansas and was a 1965 graduate of Liberal High School in Liberal, Kansas. She furthered her education at the St. Francis School of Nursing in Wichita, Kansas. On June 22, 1968, she was united in marriage to Gary L. Mitchell and to this union four children were born. In 1971 they moved their family to Joplin, Missouri. She was employed by Freeman Hospital for several years as a Registered Nurse, retiring in 2006. She enjoyed traveling, cooking, and spending countless hours with her family, especially her grandchildren. Kathy was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Joplin.

Kathy is survived by her husband of forty-seven years, Gary Mitchell of the home; four children, Mike Mitchell and wife, Jenna, of St. Louis, Missouri, Scott Mitchell and wife, Sara, of Bixby, Oklahoma, Pat Mitchell of Nixa, Missouri and Carolyn Mitchell of Tupelo, Mississippi; eight grandchildren, Ally, Jacey, Mason, Anna Kate, Ryan, Allie Jo, Josie and Max; as well as a host of other family and friends.

Funeral Mass for Mrs. Mitchell will be held on Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Joplin, Missouri with Father Justin Monaghan officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Webb City, Missouri. A Rosary will be recited on Monday evening at 6:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary with visitation following until 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials are being directed to either the American Cancer Society or St. Mary’s Catholic Church Building Fund and contributions may be left at the Mortuary. Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of the Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary in Joplin, Missouri.
