Doris J. Jones Retherford Hoover age 84 of Joplin, Missouri passed away Tuesday April 21, 2015 at the Communities of Wildwood Ranch.
Doris was born August 4, 1930 in St. Louis, Missouri to the late DeWitt and Nelle O’Brien Jones. She moved to Joplin, Missouri in the third grade where she resided most of her life. She graduated from St. Peter’s High School in 1948 and later from the Joplin Junior College.
Doris worked as a caseworker for the Missouri Department of Family Services from 1970 until her retirement in 1991.
In February, 1952 she married Herbert Reterford, and he passed away in 1971. She married Raymond “Doc” Hoover in January, 1977, and he passed away in June 2000.
Doris was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Joplin, Missouri.
Known for her expert card playing, especially bridge. Doris was always ready to join in, until her health prevented this favorite pastime the past several months. In recent years, she became an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan, enjoying every televised game. Doris loved to entertain, as evident of her welcoming smile, a full candy dish and a coke as soon as you walked through the door.
Survivors include daughters; Nancy and husband Mike Johnson, Joplin, Missouri, Linda and husband Ron Mathes, Bowling Green, Ohio, and a son; David and wife Kathy Retherford, Simpsonville, South Carolina, five grandchildren; Stephanie McGrew, Joplin, Missouri, Chad Mathes, St. Louis, Missouri, Stacey Hawkins, Wichita, Kansas, Dusty Retherford, Greenville, South Carolina, Kelsey Goblick, Greenville, South Carolina, ten great grandchildren, as well as many in her extended family and wonderful friends.
Funeral services will be 10:00 am Saturday April 25, 2015 at the Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary with Reverend Dr. Dave Burgess, officiating. Burial will follow at the Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday April 24, 2015 from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the mortuary.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or Mercy Hospice.
