Laura Lorraine (George) McFarland, age 94, Joplin, passed away on Saturday, April 18, 2015 at a local nursing center.
Laura was born August 10, 1920 in Pittsburg, Kansas, daughter of the late Floyd M. Clark and Anna Laura McPherson Clark. She grew up in West Mineral, Kansas and graduated from West Mineral High School. She worked for over 26 years at Big Smith Clothing, and she and her husband Hugh, owned and operated George's Oasis Restaurant in Webb City for many years.
Laura was a fifty year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and active member of Prairie Flower Bible Church, was a former scout leader, volunteer with St. John's Hospital, but her biggest enjoyment was being with her family, especially her grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Laura was preceded in death by two husbands, S.H. "Hugh" George who died December 1, 1979, and Ercle "Mac" McFarland who died October 2, 1983, a grandson, Larry Mathes, two brothers, and a sister.
Survivors include her children, Charles H. George of Bisbee, Arizona, Eileen Carmichael of Richmond, Missouri, and Diane Thornton and husband Bill of Joplin; step-children, Emmett McFarland of Webb City, and Barbara McKay and husband Mac of Illinois; brother, Maurice Clark and wife Kay of Joplin; grandchildren, Karen Mathes of Richmond, Missouri, Jason Thornton and Jerad Thornton both of Joplin, Donna Baker and husband Kenny of Hardin, Missouri, and Penny Carmichael of King Fisher, Oklahoma; 9 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in Parker Mortuary Chapel. Interment will follow in Crocker Cemetery, near Pittsburg, Kansas with family serving as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at Parker Mortuary on Wednessday from 1:00 p.m. until service time.
