Walter Grant Howrey, 75, of Jasper, Missouri WALKED into the arms of Jesus on January 28, 2019 in Joplin, Missouri.
Services will be held Thursday, January 31, at First Christian Church in Lamar, Missouri at 11:00 am, officiated by Terry Bowland, brother-in-law and friend.
Walter was born in Lake City, Iowa to Floyd and Beulah Howrey on November 8, 1943. He earned diplomas at Rockwell City High School, Ozark Bible College, and Fort Hays State University.
He married his high school sweetheart, Cindy McCarty, on April 5, 1966 in Rockwell City, Iowa. He shared his love of the gospel by ministering in many small towns throughout the midwest for 40 years. A paraplegic for more than decade, he didn’t let his disability stop him from tackling life. He willingly tilled any garden in exchange for a watermelon, chopped wood and kept a large garden, sweet talked the church ladies into homemade pies, and made a habit of parking his wheelchair at Heavenly Delights Donuts in Lamar, Missouri. If he set his mind to something, he would do it -- whether he should or not, would bring home anything if the “price was right,” and thought grounding prongs were for sissies.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Beulah Howrey.
Walter is survived by his wife of 52 years, Cindy Howrey, daughters Melissa Fulton (Lance), Jennifer Diggs (Mark Logan), and Becky Liscombe (Todd), sisters Colleen Wood, Linda Fiscus, and brother David Howrey (Judy), grandchildren Erin Fulton, Emily Diggs, Isaac Diggs, Kaylynn Liscombe, Audrey Diggs, and Grant Liscombe.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Haitian Christian Outreach, www.hatianchristian.org, or Rapha House, www.raphahouse.org.
