Dixie Hicks

Dixie J. Hicks, lovingly known as "Mama", "Grams", and "Mimi", age 86 of Joplin, passed away at 6:17 AM on Thursday, August 21, 2025 at Mercy Hospital of Joplin.

Dixie was born in Joplin at her grandmother's house on May 4, 1939 to the union of Perry Lee Taylor and Hazel Marie (Van Volkinburg) Taylor. She was a lifetime resident of Joplin. Dixie worked until the age of 83, most recently as an innkeeper for Economy Inn & Suites of Joplin. 






As a child, she enjoyed hunting rabbits with her dad, and even won a beauty pageant in Joplin where she was crowned "The Queen of Victory". Later in life, loved farm life, caring for animals, fishing, playing with her dogs "Harper" and "Baby", going shopping - especially at garage sales, being with her kids, cooking, and altogether "running the family". She fought hard to the end, and was often described as being "tough as nails".

She was united in marriage with Jack Hicks. He preceded her in death on November 16, 1999. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Perry Taylor and Hazel Jackson-Taylor; one daughter, Joyce Goodwin; one sister, Betty Jo Hurtt; and one brother, Tony Taylor.








Survivors include two daughters, Beverly Isbell of Joplin, Brandy Rogers (husband, James) of Galena; four sons, Jackie Hicks of Joplin, Michael Goodwin (wife, Sandra) of Joplin, Ronald Hicks of Joplin, and Tony Goodwin (wife, Robin) of Walters, OK; one sister, Rosalee Wood of Asbury, MO; several grandchildren including "Little Michael" Kilgore of Joplin, Hannah Radell (husband, Jonathan) of Shawnee, OK, Taylor Hicks (wife, Amanda) of New Boston, TX, Sarah Umsted (husband, Dallas) of the State of Texas, Kasey Goodwin of Walters, OK, Peaches Goodwin of Joplin, Jacob Goodwin (wife, Monica) of Russellville, AR, Quintin Pettit (wife, Andi) of Russellville, AR, Shawn Pettit (wife, Jasmine) of Danville, AR, and Carla Modlin of Joplin; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Ms. Hicks has been entrusted to Derfelt Funeral Home of Galena for cremation. Service arrangements will be announced at a future date. Online condolences may be expressed at www.derfeltfuneralhomes.com.
