Agnes Elbert

Mrs. Agnes Marie Elbert, 91, of Joplin, Missouri, departed this life on Monday evening, May 18, 2020, at Mercy Hospital in Joplin, Missouri.

Agnes entered this life on June 10, 1928, in Freeburg, Illinois, daughter of the late John Joseph and Hattie (Rufer) Hegeman. She was raised in Joplin, Missouri, and was a 1946 graduate of St. Peter’s High School. On September 6, 1948, she was united in marriage to Marvin J. Elbert and to this union six children were born. For nearly twenty years, she was part owner and bookkeeper of S&E Machinery in Picher, Oklahoma. She, along with two of her daughters, Nikki and Stephanie, owned N.AGG.S Wallpaper Service. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, sewing and knitting. She was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Joplin.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 44 years, Marvin Elbert, on November 24, 1992; a sister, Anne Molitor; a brother, John Hegeman; a sister-in-law, Minnie Kelly; and a son-in-law, Tom Straw.








Agnes is survived by her six children, Larry Elbert of Garfield, Arkansas, Nikki Straw of Joplin, Stephanie Elbert (daughter, Meghan Colvard) of Joplin, Richard Elbert and wife, Debbie, of Pittsburg, Kansas, Robert Elbert and wife, Dottie, of Garfield, Arkansas, and Lisa Keeton and husband, David, of Webb City; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one sister, Selma Hegeman, of Joplin; and a sister-in-law, Phyllis Hegeman, of Joplin.

The family wishes to extend a sincere thanks to Dr. Russ Kennedy and his staff for their loving care.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 22, 2020, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Joplin with Father Colby Elbert officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery in Webb City. Those honoring her life by serving as pallbearers are Jeremy Higdon, Bryan Higdon, Cory Higdon, Chris Elbert, Richie Elbert, David Keeton, Travis Keeton and Aaron Keeton. Rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m. Thursday at the church with visitation following until 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary, Joplin, Missouri.
