Clarence A. Martin, Jr., M.D., age 81, Neosho, passed away Monday, May 18, 2020 at Freeman Hospital after a sudden illness.
Dr. Martin was born August 25, 1938 at home in Muldrow, Oklahoma to the late Clarence Adolph Martin and Pauline Chisum Martin.
He graduated from Muldrow High School in 1956 and from Northeastern Oklahoma State University in 1959. Dr. Martin attended the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine, graduating in 1968. He served his internship at Presbyterian Hospital, Denver, CO and his surgical residency at the University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia.
Dr. Martin served as a general and vascular surgeon in Joplin from 1970 until he retired in 2003. He served on the Board of Directors and as Chief of Staff at the former St. John's Regional Medical Center for many years. Dr. Martin was a proud founding member of the Four State Surgery Center, the first free-standing ambulatory surgery center in Joplin.
When not practicing medicine, Dr. Martin enjoyed raising horned Hereford and Red Angus cattle. He was a tribal member of the Cherokee Nation and served as a Major in the United States Army from 1968-1971 including a tour in Vietnam. In addition to ranching, he enjoyed fly fishing, golfing, and bird hunting with his close friends.
He was a member of the American Medical Association, an officer of the Missouri State Medical Association, and a member of the Jasper County Medical Society. He was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church and a current member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. He was a member of Twin Hills Golf and Country Club.
He married Mary Ann Trickey on August 1, 1959. She preceded him in death in 1989. Dr. Martin was also preceded in death by his brother, Dewey Ed Martin. He married Joan Elaine Smith in 1990. She survives at the home. Additional survivors include five daughters, Michelle Martin, Kansas City, Kansas, Kimberly Martin Polis, San Antonio, Texas, Krista Martin Roberts and husband, Kendall, Ft. Smith, Arkansas, Sarah Kathryn 'Katie' Martin, Neosho, Rebecca Ellen Martin, Kansas City, Kansas; grandchildren, Paul Martin Polis, Annie Doggett and husband, Turner, Samuel Clarence Polis; one sister, Carol Martin Logue; and a sister-in-law, Pat Martin.
Due to the restrictions in place because of the pandemic, private family services are planned for Thursday at Thornhill Dillon Mortuary. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery in Webb City, with full Military Honors.
Friends are encouraged to come by the funeral home to sign the register book and share their favorite memories of Dr. Martin, (C.A., Clarence, Chuck, ‘Doc’). The family extends their appreciation for all the thoughts and prayers they’ve received during this time. Please know that Clarence cherished each and every one of the unique relationships that you shared with him.

Joan I remember the last time I saw you and Doc at a baseball game my husband's and my granddaughter and yours and Doc's girls was playing a game .
