(From Ozark Funeral Home)Mertie Mae (Perry) Harmon, age 93 of Noel, Missouri, passed away on Saturday, February 20, 2021 at Ashley Health and Rehab in Rogers, Arkansas.
Mertie was born to the late, Claude H. and Elsie Zeona (Harmon) Perry on July 31, 1927 in Noel, Missouri.
She married Forrest Marshall Harmon on June 20, 1947, he preceded her in death on January 3, 1965. She attended the Mill Creek Baptist church in Noel, Missouri.
Mertie was a kind, generous and thoughtful friend to many, of all ages. She loved attending Noel School Reunions and knew almost everyone there! She always took her 1945 yearbook and folks gathered around to share memories and updates.
She especially loved young people, and spoiling them with special treats when she got the chance. Mertie encouraged many young people and praised their efforts. People have commented that she made them feel special and made them feel like they mattered. She had a remarkable talent for keeping secrets. She enjoyed watching wild critters - especially racoons, opossums, and birds. She appreciated art, classical music, traveling, a good joke, and the occasional beer or a glass of wine.
Mertie served on the Noel City Council for several years. She was a shareholder and served on the Noel Water Company Board of Directors for more than fifty years. After selling the Harmon Hardware business in 1980 she went to work as a teller at the State Bank of Noel, from which she retired in 1989. She was a lifelong member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a solid and beloved community member.
Mertie was preceded in death by her husband, (Forrest); her parents, (Claude and Elsie); her siblings, Daisy B. (Perry) Manning, Kenneth H Perry, and Ted Perry; and her longtime companion George H McGhee.
Mertie is survived by her daughter, Anna M. Harmon and (partner) Joyce E. Short of Noel, Missouri; two sisters, Ruth J. Briggs of Noel, Missouri, Tess Ann Sugarman, of Elk City, Oklahoma; sister-in-law, Ernie Perry, of Williamsburg, Virginia, as well as a host of other family and friends who will dearly miss her.
Private family interment for Mertie will be in the Noel Cemetery in Noel, Missouri. We do regret the complete services we had planned will not be held during these difficult times of Covid.
In lieu of flowers donations would be welcome to The Nature Conservancy and St. Jude's.
