Freddie Hemphill

Freddie (Akin) Hemphill, 103, of Purdy, MO, went to be with the Lord on May 2, 2017 while at Lacoba Homes in Monett, MO.

Freddie was born on April 23, 1914 in Galena, MO, daughter of the late Fred and Ina (Hancock) Akin. Freddie graduated from Seneca High School in Seneca, MO.

Freddie was married to Robert (Bob) Bennett who died of spinal meningitis in the first year of their marriage. To them one daughter was born. After this loss, Freddie found love again when she met William (Bill) Hemphill. On July 30, 1936, Freddie and Bill were united in marriage in Monett, MO. To this union two boys were born.

Freddie lived a long and full life, a blessing to many and loved by all. She gave her life to Christ and was baptized in her youth, and was a long-time member of the Purdy and Monett churches of Christ. She loved gardening, sewing, quilting, painting, entertaining her many visitors and friends, fishing with her husband at Roaring River and traveling all around the world. She and Bill were co-founders and long-time volunteers with Barry County Youth Camp, and provided scholarships to many through the foundation. “Her children rise up and call her blessed.”

Freddie is survived by her daughter, Bobbie Carr, of Wichita, KS; her sons, Russell Hemphill and wife Janet of Shell Knob, MO and William (Ike) Hemphill and wife Judy of Purdy, MO; Grandchildren, Susan Carr-Couey, Randall Carr, Greg Carr, Melissa Hendrickson, Dalene Hall, Lynn Lillegard, Ann Woodruff and Billy Hemphill; and numerous great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Freddie was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, and her siblings.

Funeral services for Freddie will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 6th at the Monett Church of Christ on Ninth Street. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the church. Following services, interment will be held at Arnhart Cemetery in Purdy. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Barry County Youth Camp Scholarship or Fair Haven Children’s Home Fund. Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of Buchanan Funeral Home, Monett, MO.
