Frances Hays

Frances Baker Hays, 95, passed from this life on July 17,2024 in Joplin, MO.

Frances was born to Evelyn and Roscoe Baker on August 25,1928 in Hannibal, MO. She married Richard (Shammy) Hays on October18,1947. He preceded her in death on February 2, 2005. Infant son, David Kennedy Hays, preceded her on August 5,1953.








Frances is survived by two daughters, Peggy Crabtree of Paris, MO and Karen (Bill) Dierks of Joplin, MO; her sister, Pat, of Aurora, IL; six grandchildren; R.Todd (Lisa) Crabtree, Erin (Dallas) Gruber, Kelly Wheelan, Whitney (Tony Povich) Crabtree, Scott (Paige) Dierks and Shannon Dierks Willett; 12 great-grandchildren, Gabby Willett, Payton (Jacob) Youse, Tucker Gruber, Madison Wheelan and Delaney (Trey Brown) Wheelan, Chance (Sheyenne) Wheelan, Abbie (Briar) Hancock, Landry (Logan Willmore) Crabtree, Braxton Crabtree, Bryce Hubble, Hays and Louis Dierks; and six great-great grandchildren. Jacey and Jordyn Youse, Jaxon and Ivy Jo Wheelan, Porter Hancock and Lynley Willmore.

In addition to her husband and infant son, Frances is preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Richard and John; two sisters; Catherine and Eleanor; son-in-law, Bob Crabtree; and grandson-in-law, Doug Wheelan.

Frances was cherished as a loving wife, sister, mother, grandmother, and Gigi. Entertaining family and friends was a joy for her. She succeeded in making others feel special.

She was a proud businesswoman who began her career as Deputy Ralls County and New London City Assessor. She sold real estate and in 1986 established FBH Appraisal Services of Hannibal.








Her service to others included membership on the Hospital Board, Women’s Club, Concert Association, and Regional Hospital Auxiliary.

She dedicated herself to Blessed Sacrament Church and later Holy Family Catholic Church as Eucharist minister, greeter, membership on Holy Family Foundation and Women’s Council. She also mentored students at the school.

She was an active member and avid golfer and had a hole-in-one at Hannibal Country Club.








Services will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church on August 10, 2024, at 11:00 AM. Visitation will be held at the church at 10:00 AM. Private graveside services will be held at Barkley Cemetery in New London.
