Jerry Love

Jerry "JL" SWEET BACK" Love, Jr., age 81, Joplin, passed away on Tuesday, December 10, 2019 at Joplin Health and Rehabilitation Center after a lengthy illness.

Jerry was born August 8, 1938 in Ringo, Louisiana, son of the late Jerry Love, Sr., and Katherine Mingo Love. He graduated from Joplin High School in 1958, and enjoyed boxing in his youth in Golden Gloves. He worked for Sperry Vickers until their closing, and then worked for Joplin R VIII School District until his retirement. He was a member of Unity Missionary Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, Sweetback was preceded in death by two sons, Alferd Story and Wesley Love; sisters, Vera Jenkins, Betty Love-Gray, and Helen Ruth Derrick; brothers, Raymond Love, and James Love.








Survivors include his wife Margaret Elaine Burnett Love; daughter, Cynthia Carr and husband Eric of Rochester, Michigan; son, William "Bill" Love of Joplin, daughters, LaKeisha Love, and son, Kainan Love, both of Joplin; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; brothers, J.D. Love of Joplin, and Robert Love of St. Louis, Missouri; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be Friday, December 20, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at Villa Heights Christian Church with Rev. Bernard Johnson, Rev. Rufus Kelly, and Rev. Jimmy Page officiating. Interment will follow in Parkway Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Parker Mortuary on Thursday from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.

  1. My condolences and prayers for the Love family. I was not acquainted with Jerry but I did know Raymond Ms Betty and JD as well as Jerry's nephew Keith who died protecting others during the Joplin tornado. The Love family has contributed much to the Joplin community.God Bless !
