Ruth Spohn

Ruth Lorene (Scoles) Spohn, age 97 of Grove, OK, passed away at 1:55 AM on Saturday, December 7, 2019 at Legacy Living of Baxter Springs.

Ruth was born in Rural Grove, OK on June 23, 1922 to the union of LeRoy Scoles and Ethel (Woods) Scoles. She spent many years in Cardin, OK and Baxter Springs, KS until moving to Grove in 1976. Most of her years were spent as a homemaker, but many will remember her from her time as a clerk at the JC Penney store in Baxter Springs. In her free time, she loved reading, bird watching, and in her younger years, the “lake life”, boating, fishing, and water-skiing.

She was united in marriage with James Eugene “Gene” Spohn on October 1, 1939. He preceded her in death in 2012 after just over 72 years of marriage.








She was also preceded in death by her parents, LeRoy and Ethel; a daughter, Barbara Bolin; a sister, Margaret Goodwin; and two brothers, LeRoy Scoles and Darryl Scoles.

Survivors include one daughter, Martha Chakmakian (husband, David) of Tucson, AZ; four grandchildren, Karen Chakmakian of Palo Alto, CA, Stephen Chakmakian of Phoenix, AZ, Doug Bolin of Columbus, and Valerie Harris of Rural Quapaw, OK; great-grandchildren, Chase and Matthew Bolin, Victoria and Kolton Harris, and Luke Chakmakian; five sisters, Leona Moore of Miami, OK, Elsie Scoles of East Moline, IL, Joyce Conley of Millington, TN, Doris Budy of Tucson, AZ, Barbara Wimer of Miami, OK; and one brother, Rex Scoles of Joplin, MO.

Mrs. Spohn has been entrusted to Derfelt's Baxter Chapel for cremation. A memorial service will be held at Baxter Springs Cemetery on Thursday, December 12, 2019 at 2:00 PM. Officiating will be Pastor Audie Tash, and Eulogist Duke Dotson. 

Prior to the service, you’re invited to enjoy refreshments and a time of informal visitation at the Riverton House of Prayer Church beginning at 12:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Ministerial Alliance Food Pantry, or the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department Toy Box Program.
