Samuel Van Deman, age 74, Joplin, passed away at 6:55 a.m. Wednesday, December 11, 2019 at his home after an illness.
Samuel was born June 26, 1945 in Pittsburg, Kansas to the late Harold den Bleyker Van Deman and Clara Leota DeWater Van Deman and had lived in the Joplin area most of his life.
A barber by trade in his early life, Samuel worked as manager at the former Wyatt's Cafeteria for several years. He also worked in management positions and as a regional director for Wal-Mart, Inc. Following retirement he worked for the Carl Junction Schools in the food service department.
He loved the outdoors and enjoyed fixing things around the house, tinkering with old cars, building models with the kids, and spending time with his granddaughters.
Sam was a member of several churches over the years. His involvement in church was a fundamental aspect of his life. He served his churches as youth group leader, choir member, and deacon. One of the highlights of his church experience was his guidance with the Young at Heart Group that has resulted in lifelong friendships.
Samuel married Brenda ‘Diane’ Frisby on July 2, 1971 in Joplin. They were married for forty eight years. She survives at the home.
Additional survivors include his children, Kimberly Sisk and husband, Tracy, Darrin Van Deman and wife, Kristy, Jennifer Dudeck and husband, Rod, Curtis Walker and wife Melinda; one brother, Carlton Wayne Van Deman; ten grandchildren; and his 'honorary family', the home bible study group.
In addition to his parents, Samuel was preceded in death by a brother, John Harold Van Deman.
Memorial services are planned for Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Villa Heights Christian Church. Truman Brady, minister, will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Villa Heights Christian Church, in care of Parker Mortuary.
