Gregory Joel Miller, 62, Joplin, passed away at 7:04 p.m. Thursday, November 4, 2013, at Barnes Jewish Hospital, St. Louis, following an illness.
Greg was born May 19, 1951, in California to the late Joseph Miller and Georgia Miller Healy.
He worked in management in the restaurant and retail industry for several years and retired due to ill health. He loved animals and the outdoors. He enjoyed talking on his CB radio and was a veteran of the United States Army. Greg loved the Lord and was a faithful member of College Heights Christian Church.
He married Vicky Vermillion in Joplin in 1982. She survives at the home.
Additional survivors include his children, Christina Bosch and Joseph Townsend, both of Washington; siblings, Kathy Stevens, Casey Healy, and Patrick Healy; grandchildren, Anthony, Tyler, and Robyn; great-grandchild Jayden; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Greg was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Gates; one brother, Bruce Miller, and a stepfather John Healy.
Services are planned for Wednesday at 11 a.m. at College Heights Christian Church. Interment will follow at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 7 p.m. at Parker Mortuary.
Memorial contributions may be made to College Heights Christian Church.

Thelma Mitchell
Thelma Leona Mitchell, 92, Neosho, passed away at 5 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013, at Webb City Health and Rehabilitation Center after an illness.
Thelma was born December 13, 1920, in Slick, Oklahoma, to the late Henry Orr and Harvey Bell Orr and had lived in the Joplin area for the past 12 years.
A homemaker, she was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed quilting.
Her husband, Everett Mitchell, preceded her in death in May of 1976.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Virgil Mitchell; a grandson, Robert Bateson; and a great-grandson, Abraham Koury.
Survivors include a son, Danny Mitchell and his wife, Karen, Neosho; one sister, Betty Jo Alloway and her husband, Mel, Tulsa, Oklahoma; four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services are planned for Tuesday at 12 p.m. at Little Cemetery, Little, Oklahoma.
Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
Bill Cupp
William J. "Bill" Cupp, age 75, Joplin, passed away at 11:17 p.m. Thursday, November 14, 2013, at his residence.
Bill was born March 14, 1938, in Spring City, Missouri, to the late Harold S. Cupp and Ethel F.
Rhamey Cupp and had lived in the Joplin area most of his life.
He worked as a supervisor for Hudson Foods for 13 years. He also worked as a supervisor for Big John's Heavy Equipment for 10 years, retiring in 2001. Bill enjoyed fishing and was a faithful member of Church of God-Seventh Day.
Bill was a dedicated Christian who loved his church. He loved to fish with his brothers, nephews, grandchildren, and friends. He always looked forward to the annual camping trips at the creek or lake so he could spend valuable time with his family. His nieces and nephews meant so much to him. He looked forward to their phone calls and visits. He was a person who would always lend a helping hand to anyone in need. His sisters and brother had a wonderful relationship. When they got together, it was a joy to hear them talk about the events of their childhood. Most of all, he was a kind, wonderful husband who always treated his wife with love and admiration.
The family would like to thank Mercy Hospice for the excellent care they showed to Bill.
He married Carolyn Hall on October 28, 1962, in Joplin. She survives at the home.
Additional survivors include six grandchildren, Michael Miller, Carterville; Ryan Miller, Carterville; Rachael Miller, Carterville; Randon Miller, Springdale, Ark.; Taylar Miller, Springdale, Ark., Melissa Cupp, Sarcoxie; one great-grandchild, Caden William Miller; siblings, Harrison Cupp and his wife, Ruby, Joplin; Oliver Cupp and his wife, Dorothy, Carterville; Dorothy Wright, Windsor, Missouri; Helen Lewis, Baxter Springs, Kan.; Mildred Hight, Joplin; numerous nieces and nephews, including Larry Miller, Joplin.
Graveside services are planned for Monday at 10 a.m. at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. Dave Gartner will officiate. The nephews will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 to 3 p.m. at Parker Mortuary.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of God-Seventh Day, or to Mercy Hospice.
Arrangement are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.

David Dawley
David C. Dawley, age 59, of Midland, Texas, a former Diamond and Joplin area resident passed away at 5:32 p.m. Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at the Midland Memorial Hospital in Midland following a sudden illness. Dave was born May 28, 1954 in Corona, California. He lived in the Joplin-Diamond area in the late 60’s and early 70’s and graduated from Diamond High School in 1972. He also attended Crowder College. Dave was associated with the J.C. Penney Company for 40 years and was currently the manager of the Midland, Texas store, a position he had for the last three years.
Dave married Carol Showalter July 26, 1975 in Diamond, Mo. and she survives. Additional survivors include his parents, Fred and Rachel Dawley, Joplin, and two brothers, Larry Dawley, Shawnee, Ks., and Jim Dawley and wife Susan, Carthage, Mo.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Diamond Christian Church with Mike Whorlow, Minister, officiating. Burial will follow in the Diamond Cemetery. Those honoring Dave’s life by serving as pallbearers will be Gene Talbott, Dean Talbott, Broc Witt, Wayne Morgan, Jim Dawley, and Nathan Dawley.
Memorial contributions are requested to the High Sky Children’s Ranch in Midland, Texas in care of the Mortuary. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Mason-Woodard Mortuary of Joplin, Mo.
Jim Curtis
James Walter Curtis “Jim”, age 72, of Joplin, passed away Thursday, November 14, 2013 at Barnes Jewish Hospital following an illness.
Jim was born April 9, 1941 in Quincy, Illinois to Paul V. and Elaine B. (Gustafson) Curtis.
He was a 1959 graduate of Kirksville High School and 1963 graduate of Truman State University.
Jim married Mary Ellen Fagen October 5, 1962 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Washington, Iowa, she survives of the home.
Prior to his current position as owner/account executive at Peregrine Corporation, Jim had worked for Skelly/Getty Oil Company for 18 years, Uarco Business Forms for 13 years and MBF Corporation for 5 years.
He was a member of the St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Joplin.
Jim was a family man in the truest form. He was very involved in the lives of his children and grandchildren always cheering them on as their biggest fan. Jim loved to work and never turned down an opportunity to help others. Whether it was making Christmas baskets with the Elk’s Lodge in Joplin, where he was a member, or just listening and offering guidance and counsel as a friend, he was never too busy. Jim also loved watching NASCAR and being outdoors.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Ellen Curtis, his mother, Elaine Curtis, his children, Jim Curtis and wife Tracy of Joplin and Chrissy McKee and husband Ryan of Webb City; grandchildren, Holly Curtis, Colton McKee, Braden McKee, Cody Webb and wife Krista; great grandchildren, Ryan Wait and Emma and Lilly Webb; sisters, Patty Northrop and husband Dr. Fred Northrop and Karen Wright and husband Ed.
He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Curtis, daughter, Kelly Jo Curtis and brother, Tom Curtis.
Memorial Services will be 1:00 PM Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at the St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Joplin with Pastor Aaron Brown officiating. He will be placed in a Columbarium at Mt. Hope Cemetery after a private family service.
In Remembrance of Jim, donations can be made to the Leukemia Research Foundation or to St Paul's United Methodist Church, in care of Simpson Funeral Home.
Michael Carey
Michael L. Carey “Mike”, age 61 of Webb City, passed away Thursday, November 14, 2013 at his home, with his family by his side.
Mike was born May 6, 1952 in Webb City to William and Phyllis “Jeannie” Hostetter Carey. He was a 1970 Webb City High School Graduate and attended the Joplin Junior College. Mike was a realtor and the owner/operator of the Quaker Miller Park and Grocery. Most of his time was spent outdoors where he loved to spend time at the river, fish and drive his tractor. His children were his prize possession and he adored his grandchildren. He enjoyed his outings to the casino, as well.
Mike is survived by his dad, William Carey, children, Amy Gannaway and husband Rod and Misty Ray and husband Rob; grandchildren, Ashley, Shylynn and Chandler Ray and Gavin and Kerrington Gannaway; Great Grandchildren Quinlee and Grady Ebbs; sister, Linda Cook and husband David; a brother, Bill Carey and Mike’s significant other, Jackie Henslee. Mike was preceded in death by his mother, a brother, Alan Carey and a sister, Elizabeth Carey.
A memorial visitation will be Sunday, November 17, 2013 from 3:00 – 5:00 PM at the Simpson Funeral Home in Webb City. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Mike L. Carey Benefit at Southwest Missouri Bank (SMB) to help with medical expenses.

Sue Billingsly
Wanda Sue Billingsly, age 89, died Tuesday, November 12, 2013, at her home in Joplin, Mo.
Sue was born on October 4, 1924 in Sheldon, Mo. to the late Gladys (Darling) and Ray McGehee. She graduated from Sheldon High School, and attended Southwest Missouri State University (now Missouri State University) in Springfield, Mo., where she met Leon Billingsly, the love of her life. They were married in 1942. She then attended and graduated from Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Ks. She taught in Lamar, Golden City, rural schools, Pittsburg and in Joplin. She graduated from the University of Arkansas with a Master’s in Education degree.
In addition to a twenty year teaching career, Sue was the wife of the first President of Missouri Southern State University (Missouri Southern College at the time), and after his death, served as the first MSSU Foundation Director for twenty years from 1979-1999.
She was a member of numerous organizations and sisterhoods- PEO, Delta Gamma Fraternity, MSSC Faculty Wives, American Association of University Women, Tri State Trucking Board of Directors from 1980 to 1986, to name only a few.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Jerold McGehee, and her husband, Leon Billingsly. She is survived by her daughter, Connie Billingsly Godwin, of Joplin; sister-in-law, Hazel Magers of New Cumberland, Pa.; seven nieces; four nephews; many great nieces and nephews, her beloved dog, Andy, life long friends Betty Jo Gilkey, Betty Jean Castor, and Ethel McCormick.
Visitation will be held Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. at Mason-Woodard Mortuary, with graveside rites at 12:00 p.m. at Mount Hope Cemetery on North Rangeline in Webb City.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Missouri Southern State University Foundation or Carl Junction Schools Foundation.
