Reuben Curtis Comer, age 73, of Joplin, Missouri, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, January 31, 2018, at Mercy Hospital in Joplin.
Reuben was born on April 23, 1944, in Wichita, Kansas, to the union of Ralph and Irene (Connor) Comer. He was raised in Joplin and attended St. Peter’s School and McAuley High School, where he graduated in 1962. Reuben’s love for cars brought about his talent in mechanics and people soon found out that he could fix just about anything. In his earlier years, Reuben worked for Cummings and Payless Cashways in Joplin. Later, he worked for CFI in Joplin, where he retired after many years of service. He was currently employed at Spencer’s Car Company and Salvage on West 7th in Joplin.
Reuben was a man of faith. He was a 56-year member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Joplin, where he served actively as an usher. Reuben was the first to church every Sunday so he could organize all of the pews in the sanctuary and make sure everything was perfect for morning mass. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. Reuben had an immeasurable love for his family, especially his mother, and he generously cared for her after the passing of his father. All that knew him thought so very highly of him and he will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Comer; and a great-nephew, Mikeal Crandall.
Survivors include his mother, Irene, of Joplin, Missouri; his sister, Gail Crandall, of Joplin; three nephews, Ronnie Crandall (Donna) of Loma Linda, Missouri, Robert Crandall (Nancy) of Neosho, Missouri, and Reuben Crandall (Stacy) of Stark City, Missouri; 12 great-nieces and great-nephews; 22 great-great-nieces and nephews; as well as a host of extended family and friends.
Funeral Mass for Mr. Comer is 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 6, 2018, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Joplin with Father Justin Monaghan officiating. Burial will follow at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery in Joplin. Rosary and Prayer Service is 6:00 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary with visitation following until 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church or Joplin Area Catholic Schools in care of the mortuary. Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary, Joplin, Missouri.
