Shawn Avey

Shawn Michael Avey, age 43, Joplin, passed away on Monday, January 17, 2022 at his home with family at his side.

Shawn was born July 1, 1978 in Columbus, Kansas, son of the late Terri Bradley-Murray and Phillip Leroy Avey of Joplin. He grew up in Joplin where he graduated from High School before going to work as a chef, working at different local restaurants. He liked listening to different styles of music and playing his guitar. He also enjoyed playing frisbee golf in a course he designed in the back yard. Shawn was a member of First Baptist Church of Joplin.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Terri Bradley-Murray.

Survivors include his wife, Melissa McAfee; daughter, Maria Avey of Springfield, Missouri; father, Phillip Avey and wife Brenda of Joplin; Bonus Dad, Wes Murray; brothers, Phillip McMaster, Jr., Timothy Avey of Springfield, Jacob Avey and wife Mallory of Oronogo, Missouri, Brian Phillips of Eldon, Missouri, and James Phillips of Joplin; sister, Lynette Yandell of Joplin; brother from another mother, Thom Rhodes and wife Nikki of Carthage; several other extended family members, and many friends.

Memorial service will be Saturday, January 22, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Joplin with Pastor Jamie Tickle officiating.

The family will receive friends at First Baptist Church from 1:00 until service time on Saturday.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Benefit for Shawn Avey c/o Southwest Missouri Bank.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
