Matt Emmert

Michael Mathis (Matt) Emmert age 62 of Joplin, passed away at 9:10 p.m. on Friday, January 24, 2014.

Born January 3, 1952 in Joplin, he was the son of the late Leo Emmert and Ellen Emmert Strater and lived most of his life in Joplin. A 1969 graduate of Memorial High School, he received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration – Accounting at Missouri Southern State University in December 1976. He served in the 203rdBattalion of the Missouri National Guard from 1970 – 1976 where he was a water purification specialist.

During high school Matt played on the Memorial High School Tennis Team. He won the Ozark Conference Doubles Championship his senior year.

After graduation from college he worked as a Controller for Montgomery Ward & Co, Kansas City, MO. He was a Certified Public Accountant. In April 1979 Matt joined Leggett & Platt, Inc., Carthage, MO where he held various accounting positions and retired after 32 years as Assistant Corporate Controller.

He was a member of First Community Church in Joplin. He previously held the positions of Chairman of the Church Board, Deacon, and currently served on the Finance Committee. He was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Missouri State Certified Accountant Society, as well as Joplin Elk’s Lodge No. 501.

On December 13, 1974, he married Janet Moult at First Community Church in Joplin. They just celebrated their 39th anniversary. She survives.

Additional survivors include a daughter, Gina Trimble and husband Allen of Joplin; son, Justin Emmert and wife Amelia of Franklin, TN; two brothers, Charles Emmert and wife Judy of Webb City, Terry Emmert and wife Ada of Riverton, KS; his mother-in-law, Jane Wiles Moult of Joplin; two beloved granddaughters, Jenna and Jessica Trimble and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Pat Wallace and Pam “Penny” Jones Bruffet, both of Carthage.

He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 28th at First Community Church, Joplin with Dr. Craig Tally, pastor officiating. A private graveside service will be held prior to the service. The family will receive friends 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday, January 27th at Parker Mortuary.
