Robert Morgan

Robert LeRoy Morgan (Roy), 88, passed away January 14, 2014. He was born October 15, 1925 in Joplin, Mo, a son of the late George A. and Edna M. Morgan.

He graduated from Joplin High School in 1944. He entered the Air Force for pilot training during World War II. Roy married Mary Virginia Dugan on August 9, 1946 in Joplin, Mo. Four children were born to that union.

Roy and his wife owned and operated Morgan’s Grocery, a neighborhood store, on West Second Street for 29 years. After his wife’s passing in 1974, he worked for Joplin Janitorial Supply as a salesman for 8 years. The last 5 years of his working career were in sales with Hiltz Janitorial Supply. After his retirement, he helped his brother J.W., in Morgan’s Pawn Shop for several years.

Roy’s hobbies were fishing, square dancing, and bridge. In his younger years he was a numismatic and enjoyed investing with his brother J.W. His friendly smile and warm personality won him many friends. He enjoyed learning; taking a computer class and jewelry making class at age 70. He also enjoyed sharing his knowledge with others, teaching several of his friends to play bridge and traveling to bridge tournaments in the area.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Virginia Morgan (wife), Lewis Morgan and James W. Morgan (brothers), and Francie Stauffer (daughter).

Roy is survived by two daughters, Carol Potter, (husband, Don), Joplin, Mo., Cindy Owens, (husband Doug), North Carolina, and son, John Morgan, Missouri. Additional survivors include Sam Stauffer (son-in-law), Mildred Morgan (sister-in-law) and Francis Morgan (foster brother) wife Martha, nine grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren.

The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Oxford Hospice and Visiting Angels for their compassionate care.

Memorial Services will be at Mason-Woodard Mortuary on Sunday, January 19, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. with pastor Sam Stauffer officiating.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Oxford Hospice or Visiting Angels in care of Mason-Woodard Mortuary.

Arrangements are under the direction of Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Crematory.
