Sharon Berkstresser

(From Parker Mortuary)

Sharon Berkstresser, age 84, formerly of Joplin, Missouri, passed away at her home in Springdale, Arkansas on Wednesday, September 11, 2024 following a sudden illness. Sharon was born on June 6, 1940 in Excelsior Springs, Missouri to the late James and Lydia (Hart) Miller.

Sharon graduated from the University of Missouri with her Bachelor's Degree in Higher Education and History. She taught American Civics at Joplin High School before taking on her true calling as a full-time mother and homemaker.

Sharon was a very busy wife and mother, always making sure the kids were at every practice and sporting event. She loved animals and would make cat or dog food ‘magically’ appear for the stray animals around her home. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, the local teacher’s society and was a very active volunteer for many years with her church, First United Methodist of Joplin.

Sharon married Jerry Berkstresser on December 2, 1962 in Excelsior Springs, Missouri. After a blessed 47 years together, Jerry passed away on July 28, 2009.

To this union were her two children, Brian Berkstresser and wife, Terry of Joplin; her daughter, Becky Pinson of Springdale, Arkansas and one grandson, Declan Berkstresser; one brother, Jack Miller (Barbara) of Santa Rosa, California.

In the final chapter of her life, Sharon perfected her golf hole in one and bowling strike streak. She explored Arkansas trails, took painting classes at Crystal Bridges, bought flowers at every Fayetteville farmer’s market, took train rides with the Senior Center club to Branson and Eureka Springs, ate lunch at every patio where live bands played, planted beautiful gardens and spent hours showering her love on her puppy Tucker. She ended every day saying this was the best day ever. And so it was.

Graveside services are planned for Wednesday, September 18, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at the Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery in Joplin. Family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 17th from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. at the Parker Mortuary Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Joplin Humane Society in care of the mortuary.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary, Joplin, Missouri.
