William Howard "Bill" Shriver, age 93, Joplin, passed away on Monday, November 25, 2019 at Freeman West Hospital.
Bill was born July 7, 1926 in New Castle, Pennsylvania, son of the late Howard W. Shriver and Loretta Kamman Shriver. He grew up in New Castle and attended St. Mary's Catholic School where he was an altar boy before graduating from New Castle High School in 1944. Bill served his country in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II, serving in the Pacific Theatre. He attended Youngstown College, graduating with honors in 1953 with a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting. He enjoyed playing baseball for the local American Legion Team where he was a standout pitcher. While attending Youngstown College he also worked for the B&O Railroad.
He began his career in 1953 as an accounting executive with U.S. Steel. Bill worked for over 30 years at various locations in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana for U.S. Steel before retiring in 1983. He consulted for U.S. Steel after his retirement. Bill and his wife Lois moved to Joplin in 1996.
Bill was a member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church. He enjoyed playing chess, checkers, cards, and golf with his friends and family. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by a son, Robert C. Shriver.
Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Lois J. Carroll Shriver; son, William H. Shriver Jr. and wife Christiane, of Parker, Colorado; daughter, Lauren J. Stauffer of Joplin; six grandchildren: Lars Shriver, Marcus Shriver, Robert Shriver, Alyssa Shriver, Jordan Stauffer, and Austin Stauffer; two great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
Memorial Mass will be Tuesday, December 10, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church with Father J. Friedel officiating.
Inurment of his ashes will be at a later date in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, New Castle, Pennsylvania.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
