(From Parker Mortuary)Michael LeRoy Johnson, age 73, of Joplin, passed away on Saturday, September 25, 2021 at his home surrounded by family.
Michael, son of the late William B. and Lois (Hester) Johnson, was born on October 17, 1947 in Joplin. He was a lifelong Joplin resident and a graduate of Joplin High School Class of 1965. Soon after graduating high school, he joined the Missouri Armory National Guard honorably serving for seven years.
He was united in marriage to Kay Mauller, on June 14, 1973 in Joplin.
Michael was employed for several years as a transportation manager for the trucking industry until his retirement. In his early years Michael was an active fast pitch softball player and enjoyed bowling with his bowling league. He was a past president of the Joplin Jaycees and former State Vice President, where he was the recipient of the JCI Senator Award. He was also an Eagle Scout, a little league coach, Upward Bound soccer coach, an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan, and a member of the First Baptist Church of Joplin.
If Michael wasn’t coaching his kids’ teams, he was attending their games, plays, and dance recitals. As a Papa to eight grandchildren, he never missed an event. He so loved his kids and grandkids, but also held a special place for all their friends and was known as being a “stand in dad” for others. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Kay Johnson, of Joplin; their children, Jamie Johnson, and his wife Michelle, of Joplin, Michelle Hoag, and her husband, John, of Des Moines, IA, Katy Kelley, and her husband, Steven, of Joplin, and Ryan Johnson, and his wife, Juah, of Joplin; Lifelong friend, John Hicks, of Joplin; eight grandchildren, Laney Hoag, Dylan Altheide, Jackson Hoag, Kreighton Johnson, Kennedy Kelley, Karson Johnson, Kooper Kelley, and Greenlea Johnson.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 30, 2021 at 3:00 PM at the First Baptist Church in Joplin. The family will receive friends for a time of visitation beginning at 2:00 PM prior to service at the church. Private family burial will be held at a later date at the Osborne Memorial Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund and may be entrusted to the mortuary.
Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of Parker Mortuary, Joplin.
