Shag Pendleton

Donald Warren “Shag” Pendleton, 88, Carthage, Missouri, passed away Thursday evening, June 30, 2022 at his home with family by his side. 

Shag was born April 9, 1934 in Carthage, Missouri, the son of Millard “Mit” Pendleton and Mildred (Tanner) Pendleton. He was a 1952 graduate of Carthage High School. He attended and played basketball at William Jewell, then transferred to Pittsburg State University where he received his B.S. degrees in physical education and psychology, with a minor in history. 









Shag married the love of his life, Barbara McWilliams, on August 8, 1954 in Carthage. He worked as physical director at the YMCA in Carthage from 1954-1960, a juvenile officer from 1960-1962, and a parole officer for the state of Missouri from 1962-1992 until his retirement. Shag also refereed basketball games from 1959-1979. He was very instrumental in starting the youth programs at the YMCA, and taught swimming lessons for kids. 

Shag was very strong in faith and was baptized in Spring River in 1947. He was a member of Christ’s Church of Oronogo since 1999. Shag enjoyed fishing and hunting in Colorado, but most of all, loved spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Barbara Pendleton; two daughters, Cyndy Macy, Carthage, and Sue Roughton (Scott), Carthage; four grandchildren, Kyley Patterson (Chris), Diamond, Missouri, Jody Roughton (Tysha), Carthage, Aspen Roughton (Ryan), Webb City, Missouri, and Jordan Macy (Taylor), Carthage; fifteen great-grandchildren, Kelley Renfro (Colton), Diamond, Eryn Nixon (Trey), Diamond, Addy and Alley Patterson, Diamond, Ada, Mitt, Radyn, and Dia Roughton, all of Carthage, Hudson, Oakley, and Bentley Waters, all of Webb City, and Greyson, Taedyn, Laityn, and Bowdin Macy, all of Carthage; two great-great-grandchildren, Ruger and Brynlee Renfro, Diamond; and many extended family and friends.








He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son-in-law, Randy Macy.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 am, Wednesday, July 6, 2022 at Christ’s Church of Oronogo, Oronogo, Missouri. Burial will follow the service at Park Cemetery, Carthage. The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm, Tuesday, July 5, 2022 at Knell Mortuary, Carthage.
