Henry H. “Hank” Kost, age 86, of Joplin, Mo. passed away at 6:34 a.m. Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at Mercy Hospital Joplin. Henry was born September 29, 1927 in Joplin and was a lifetime Joplin resident. Henry was a 1945 graduate of the Wentworth Military Academy in Lexington, Mo. He was a 1954 graduate of Pittsburg State University. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during WW II. Henry had a 35 year career with Empire District Electric Co., retiring in 1989 as Secretary-Treasurer for the Company.
Henry was a lifelong member of the First Community Church of Joplin. He served on the Church Board, and sang many years in the Church Choir. He was a member of the Joplin Elk’s Lodge #501 and a member of the Italian Heritage Society Henry was a former member of the Joplin Kiwanis Club, and a former member of the Centennial Choir in Pittsburg, Kansas. Henry’s hobbies included working with stained glass, painting, gardening, reading, and classical music. He and his wife enjoyed traveling abroad, particularly in Italy.
Henry married Ruth Kelley January 14, 1954 in Joplin and she survives. Additional survivors include a son, Gregory Kelley Kost and wife Cynthia, Jackson, Tennesee, one daughter Jane Annette Autry and husband Steve, Houston, Texas, one sister, Marilyn Bowers, Saratoga, California, and three grandchildren; Patricia Jane Kost, Rebecca Elizabeth Autry, and Katherine Kelley Autry. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert L. Kost.
Memorial services will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at the First Community Church with Rev. Craig Tally and Rev. Brock Watson officiating. Following the service the family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall. Inurnment will be in the Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions are requested to the First Community Church or the Joplin Humane Society in care of the Mortuary. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Mason-Woodard Mortuary of Joplin, Mo.
